Yes or No... Pac Man was suspended after being convicted of a crime

The answer is yes

I think you've argued yourself into a corner on this one... you can be suspended by the NFL after a conviction... the fact they were more lenient and did not suspend him at the time he was sentenced to probation is only evidence they were not as harsh as they could have been

Jones was suspended because of a series of incidents, with the Vegas incident being the final one. He had already been arrested and charged in previous incidents.

Ben hasn't been arrested for or convicted of anything.

That being said, I think the NFL has tried to establish that they will suspend players for casting the league in a intensely negative light, but I don't think that's present yet here.

Besides, they have time to let the facts come out.

But not for THAT specific incident.

The point is that Goodell can and will suspend a player prior ANY conviction, as he did in Vick's case.

Anyway, the argument is whether Goodell will suspend Ben without a conviction in this case. I contended (and still contend) that he doesn't need conviction (or admission of guilt) in the case at hand for a suspension.

Do you or do you not believe that Goodell will suspend Ben if he is charged and standing trial for rape or sexual assault?

How is that possibly the point... the NFL has a very reasonable policy on player conduct it seems to me... they do not take action with suspension unless the player has been convicted of a crime or admitted guilt

You seem to be arguing that Pac Man's suspension took place in a vacuum... which is the furthest thing from the truth

He was involved in a string of suspicious incidents and was convicted of a crime before ever being suspended

No, I doubt he will attempt to set a new precedent on player suspensions this year

If he had a prior conviction or he admitted guilt in the matter then he would be suspended - probably even before the trial completed

I'm not arguing that at all.

I'm well aware of that, and while Roethlisberger has not been convicted of a crime, he HAS been a black eye on the league in the past. Won't merit the year suspension that Jones got or the indefinite that Vick got (Vick is truly a better comparison because he showed a pattern of poor judgement prior to his situation, and the timing of the event is similar), but IF he goes to trial and there are football activities (minicamp or even training camp), rest assured that Goodell will ban him from team activities until the trial is over, as he did with Vick.

I will repeat this for the umpteenth time:

When Michael Vick was charged with dogfighting, Arthur Blank wanted the team to suspend him from training camp for the maximum allowed 4 days. Goodell stepped in and PROHIBITED HIM FROM TRAINING CAMP FOR THE DURATION OF THE TRIAL, citing it as a distraction.

That is a suspension in all but name.

After the guilty plea, Vick was officially suspended indefinitely.

The same can, and likely would, happen to Roethlisberger if his trial interferes with minicamp or training camp.

I think we've established the order of the pac man case was clearly... string of incidents, conviction, suspension

mind linking something regarding the vick case to show he was suspended from NFL games prior to admission or guilt or conviction... as I remember the preseason Falcons Vick stuff it was a mutual agreement because MV had more important issues then than preseason workouts

Vick was banned from training camp by the league.

LINK

July 23, 2007: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell orders Vick not to report to the Falcons' training camp until the league reviews the dog fighting charges, citing the league's conduct policy.

July 24, 2007: Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank holds a news conference, saying he was prepared to give the maximum 4-day suspension to Vick before the NFL stepped in. He refuses to comment on Vick's future with the team, but calls the behavior "horrific."

July 26, 2007: Vick pleads not guilty in federal court in Richmond. He waived his right to a speedy trial. His trial date is set for Nov. 26.

July 27, 2007: Reebok, a Vick sponsor, stops selling NFL products related to Vick, including his No. 7 jersey replicas. Also, Upper Deck is pulled Vick trading cards from sets to be released this fall, and removed autographed Vick memorabilia from its online store. Rawlings Sporting Goods has also ended its relationship with the beleaguered player.

July 30, 2007: Co-defendant Tony Taylor pleads guilty to dog-fighting charges. Taylor also agrees to cooperate with the prosecution, including testifying at his co-defendants' trial. Also, Vick tells Atlanta radio station WVEE-FM he's put the Falcons through a lot but hopes he can play with the team again.

Aug. 17, 2007: Vick's other two co-defendants, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, plead guilty to dogfighting charges. They say they traveled with Vick to dogfights and described, in detail, "executing approximately eight dogs that did not perform well in testing sessions" by hanging and drowning.

Aug. 20, 2007: Vick's lawyer, Billy Martin, says that Vick agrees to plead guilty to dogfighting charges.

Aug. 23, 2007: Vick signs plea agreement and statement of facts admitting to conspiracy in a dogfighting ring and helping kill pit bulls. He denied betting on the fights, only bankrolling them.

It was after this that he was officially suspended, but Goodell essentially suspended him by "ordering him not to report to camp" and then intervening when Blank said that he would let Vick practice after 4 days.

IF Ben goes to trial, it would probably be in the summer, so Goodell may do the same to him.

BTW, since you'll be reading this after lunch, hope it went well.
