No need to nerd out. It's Kareem. He is still the all-time leading scorer in the NBA. That makes him the best.

I'm not saying it makes sense. But it changes how players and fans rank players.

Ah gotcha. Then yes, I 100% agree with that.

So pretty soon, we'll have a new best scorer in the NBA then, one no one ever mentions as one of the best scorers...

The NBA was loaded with superstars in the 1980's but I bet a lot of people don't know that the two players who scored the most points in that decade were Alex English and Adrian Dantley - both pure scorers who are largely forgotten. And Bernard King probably would have been third on that list without knee problems.

Thems the rules. Look up at the heading. The discussion isn't about the best scorer in a game. (Wilt Chamberlain, 100 points) or the best scorer in a season. (Again, Wilt Chamberlain 50.4 points per game)

The discussion is about who is the best scorer "all time." (Kareem Abdul Jabbar, 38,387 points)

If Michael Jordan didn't retire early and early a second time he would've passed Kareem in his age 37-38 season iirc. Bleacher Report did an article with some math accounting for decline in play.

They also said he would've passed Stockton in steals which is nuts.

Nobody has a problem calling Durant damn near the best scorer of all time and he’s got 8 50 points games and 0 60 point games

The difference is that we've never really seen KD get frustrated or unable to get a bucket. If nothing else, KD is a great jump-shooter, and with his height and long arms, he's shooting on anybody.

LeBron has had occasions where it looks like he's frustrated and just has to bully-ball his way to the hoop. Aesthetically, he looks like there are situations where he can't quite cope compared to KD.

I'm more a fan of old-school basketball, but I still rank KD as the best scorer of all time based on what I've seen.

Very unappealing games, though. Lots of bank shots, positioning for layups, and free throws. Very smart and efficient players, but not fan-favorites for a reason.

Lebron career true shooting % - .588

KD career true shooting % - .616

I think wek'd agree that Lebron was much more efficient than Kobe, but the difference between Lebron/Kobe is around the same as the difference between Lebron/KD.

And yet Lebron has double the 40+ point playoff games than KD, and KD has played more than half of the amount of playoff games as Lebron, so taking out all the "frustration" and what things may appear out of the equation and just looking at the facts, Lebron is more likely to go off in the playoffs than KD.

Durant eFG% .546
Lebron eFG% .545

And more importantly, Lebron’s eFG% is higher than Durant’s in the playoffs and Lebron closes the gap to 1.5% with TS%.

That’s nearly 3 1/2 seasons worth of playoff games and 9 finals against STOUT defenses and Lebron is nearly even with Durant in scoring efficiency.

He’s also out of his prime while Durant is probably still in his so I have to assume Durant’s efficiency will start to come down at some point and settle even closer to Lebron’s.

And in the playoffs Lebron’s lead over Kobe in TS% is nearly 3x Durant’s lead over Lebron.
