With UCF going down yesterday I started thinking about who had the best out-of-nowhere/mid level program run in recent years. Which of these teams was the best at their best and which program had the best run

Utah
Boise State
TCU
WVU
USF
Cincinnati
Houston
UCF

Who else am I missing (Rutgers, Kansas)

Gotta be Boise circa 2006-2012 or the sustained rise of TCU since they came on the scene about 10-11 years ago

Still Boise. They were beating top Power 5 programs in their backyard with regularity. I remember when they physically dominated a Georgia team that ended up winning the SEC East that year.

TCU is no longer a mid-major. They're back in a P5 conference.

UCF went 0-12 like 2 years before their run. That's incredible.

Same with Utah. And I don't think West Virginia ever left a power conference but they're all on his list.

Utah and TCU were not in P5 conferences at the time and WVU was in a dilapidated Big East

You'll have to define mid-major in your eyes.

WVU, USF and Cincinnati were in the Big East, so they had an auto BCS bid. Same with Rutgers.

I guess basically teams that were either not in what today would be considered P5 conference or teams with no real history of winning and who were not considered sleeping giants

It was definitely Boise. They actually got preseason ranked in the top 5 twice. Too bad their kicker blew both of those seasons.

Boise takes the cake here pretty easily. They’ve had sustained success for what, 10-15 years now? Multiple NY6 appearances and wins, conference championships, regular season wins over P5 teams (often on the road), players drafted and doing well in the league.

Boise may still be a “mid major” but they’re a national brand that people know and generally respect now.

In the 90's, Marshall seemed to come out of nowhere and were in the Top 25 for a few years. Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich were their Quarterbacks on those teams. They were probably not top of the list, but they were definitely on it.
