Remember, most of the posters on here weren't following sports 10 years ago, they don't know it existed.

There are some good ones though, now that I've watched the videos.

Go back and watch the contests from like 1986 to 1990... Unreal dunks without all the props...

We are spoiled with the athleticism and creativity nowadays. Show me a dunk performance in those years that would make it to the final round in today's dunk contest. You can't

I watched the MJ/Dominique dual today and was so incredibly bland. It was awesome for its time, but those dunks wouldn't get above 40s in today's dunk contest.

But that's the wrong way of looking at those. Those contests are, in a very real sense, the giants upon whose shoulders these guys are now standing. Without those as examples, and the 30 of so years between then and now of slowly increasing difficulty, you don;t get this contest from Saturday night. Simply placing them next to each other as if they happened a day apart doesn't give credit where credit is due, and gives far too much credit for creativity that was born from decades of slight improvements made by others.

None of that takes away from these guys, who were incredible...

He clearly stated that "it was awesome for its time."

He also said is was incredibly bland and they would not get about 40 today.

That's comparing the two as if they can legitimately be compared. I don't think that's fair. Everything starts somewhere...to compare the end result to the first steps is silly.

It's kind of like comparing guitar players from different eras and saying that Chuck Berry sucked compared to Jimi Hendrix who was nowhere near as good as Eddie Van Halen. That may be true, but without those greats paving the way...giving them something to shoot at AND attempt to surpass you don't get to now. This is especially true when it comes to something like this that depends as much on creativity as sheer athleticism.

Take the cat who won...several of his dunks were distance ones, based on coming from the free throw line. He simply added to what others had done before. MJ did that and took what Dr. J. had done a decade before him and made it not just athletic but beautiful. MJ needed DR J in order to do what he did. Lavine just took that and added to it.

Both were really good, but the best dunk was Gordon's over the mascot under the legs. That was just incredible.

I can't name the specifics, but I am pretty sure I remember similar circumstances in the past where someone did a fantastic dunk but it wasn't the last one and they ended up not winning (not gonna say losing, b/c no way did he lose).
