The portal has been so disruptive. And for the portal to be open right before bowls start makes it even worse. At least if the portal was in the offseason it wouldn’t disrupt the season as much, maybe.

I'll say during the 16 year run of the BCS era.

Remember back in the days when an undefeated top 5 team lose in the regular season ?

I also remember multiple times when an undefeated P5 was blocked from even competing for a title.

60s and 70s
Schools still had freshman teams and players stayed through their senior year

2000-2010, but 1990-2000 is right there.

2000s just because it was the BCS era.

What? No. You are incorrect. There was plenty of controversy.

In 1993, Florida State jumped undefeated West Virginia and Notre Dame (who had beaten them in the regular season) to play Nebraska for the title in the Orange Bowl.

In 1994, Penn State went undefeated and won the Rose Bowl but didn't win the title.

In 1996, Ohio State has every bit as good of a claim to a national championship as Florida did.

In 2000, Miami was passed over in favor of Florida State to play in the national championship game despite beating them earlier in the season.

How about 2001? Colorado beats the tar out of Nebraska to close the season and wins their conference, but the Huskers are the sacrificial lamb for Miami in the Rose Bowl. But then in the Fiesta Bowl, Oregon stomped Colorado. Oregon should've been in that Rose Bowl and we all know it.

We all know about the controversies in 2003 and 2004.

What about 2007? LSU is the only two-loss champion in modern college football history, and lost their last home game of the season! They avoided Mizzou and UGA teams that would've beat their arse wholesale in the BCS title game, and instead played a lame Ohio State Team who lost to Illinois at home.

We all know about the controversies in 2011 too.

Which, arguably, is what it was awesome.

So many more games mattered

Would agree as I’m currently watching Tommie Frazier and Lawrence Phillips light up Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis in the 1995 Orange Bowl.

Not really.

Neither player accounted for a TD and Nebraska only had 9 pts. heading into the 4th quarter. Corey Schlesinger was the star of the game, scoring on a Belly and Trap. If Miami’s abysmal offense could have gotten a first down or two in the fourth quarter - or hit a wide open WR for a TD - Miami probably hangs on to either win in regulation or force OT.

The Miami D played well enough to win. It was the Miami O that was weak that year. There wasn’t an Andre Johnson or Clinton Portis or Bryant McKinnie or Jeremy Shockey on that O.

I will give the 1994 Nebraska team credit for one thing, though. They played a hell of a lot more formidable teams than the more recognized 1995 group. The 1994 team had to play Colorado with Stewart and Salaam. They had to play a bowl opponent with much better personnel to defend their offense. They also had a better FB, better OL, and better WR’s.

The 1995 team gets way too much credit for running through the usual Big 8 slate (minus Switzer and McCartney) and a soft, clueless bowl opponent with a HC who (at the time) did not care about defense, much less physical defense.
