He is kinda correct. If there was a white guy that was 50 and the world champ he would have all of the endorsements.

There is truth to that because in 2014 no one would ever think a white person could do that.

A white dude walking into the ring in a masked hood calling himself the Executioner would have been banned from boxing for being racist.

Exactly. Also, this is a smart PR move by Bernard. How many of us knew he had a fight coming up this weekend before this thread?

Trash liberals would be so offended and would call him ignorant.

Don't worry Bernard, nobody cares about any boxer in 2014. The notion that a black athlete can't become an icon is hilarious.

I know I'm not representative, but I didn't know he had a fight and I won't care after I leave this thread.

exactly. when i personally think of boxing, the first 5 guys i think of are all black. without hesitation. in my next group of 5, i think 3 of them are black, pacquiao, and then butterbean just because he's hard to forget and he was in knockout kings 2000 on n64 where almost all of my boxing knowledge comes from.

The role of the mass media in today's society is to reward people for their bad behavior. Bernard Hopkins had to be the 4-year-old screaming "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!" and I'll be damned if they didn't give him attention.

probably. you can do it if you are really funny and personable like george foreman. but being surly won't do it unless you are a well-managed michael jordan with the power to crush anyone who writes something bad about you

No, it's to report stuff like this that is of zero consequence but has certain themes or buzzwords in order to get simple-minded people in a tizzy and get you to click on it and comment on it and tell everyone about and then BAM they sell ad space.

The last time Hopkins truly impressed me in the ring was against Kelly Pavlik back in 2008. He and the media think that because he's old he can get away with holding and cheating all night. If he doesn't cheat Saturday, he gets knocked the frick out. But I have a feeling Kovalev will get some points deducted for "low blows" and "head butts" that never even happened.

What's bad is Hopkins always gets an official that lets him get away with it. The ref never "sees" Hopkins engage in illegal tactics but always deducts points from the opponent when Hopkins drops to the canvas pretending to have been hit with an illegal blow.

I see this ending in one of three ways:

-Kovalev destroys Hopkins and finishes him with a KO
-Hopkins gets a win via DQ
-Fight is ruled a No Contest when Hopkins checks out early like in the first fight with Dawson

Now if Hopkins puts on a clinic like he did against Trinidad and Pavlik and embarrasses Kovalev without having to do anything illegal I'll gladly come on here and give him credit.

He realizes that most famous boxers in the last 60 years were black right?

They are the gatekeepers and agenda setters and they shamelessly tell people that if you want our attention you have to say something ignorant.

This is the problem with the hyper-capitalistic American mass media. Making money and acting irresponsibly is more important than having an informed public.

I know the names of two current boxers, and one of them is black.

Hopkins' problem is just that nobody gives a frick about boxing unless the boxer is some sort of larger than life figure.

Hopkins has a problem even with hardcore fans: no one wants to watch him hold people all night and fall down and scream FOUL any time he's in some sort of danger.

I loved it when Calzaghe beat him in 08 and it'll be even better if Kovalev can absolutely destroy him this weekend.

Hopkins is no stranger to speaking out about race. In 2011, he made national headlines for comments about then-Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb not being "black enough."

"That was the greatest moment of my life because it was undeniably white against black,"

Does he not realize that the people that say someone "isn't black enough" are typically black people?

And that's 1 of the big issues with the black community. A well spoken, hard working, edeucated, successful, clean cut, and well dressed black man is often ostracized by a lot of the black community.... i.e an "Uncle Tom".

And that's a shame. Those are the people that the black community should be looking up to and respect.
