Ben Roethlisberger says national anthem is not time for protest; will stand moving forward

I was unable to sleep last night and want to share my thoughts and feelings on our team's decision to remain in the tunnel for the National Anthem yesterday. The idea was to be unified as a team when so much attention is paid to things dividing our country, but I wish we approached it differently. We did not want to appear divided on the sideline with some standing and some kneeling or sitting.
As a team, it was not a protest of the flag or the Anthem. I personally don't believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest. For me, and many others on my team and around the league, it is a tribute to those who commit to serve and protect our country, current and past, especially the ones that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
I appreciate the unique diversity in my team and throughout the league and completely support the call for social change and the pursuit of true equality. Moving forward, I hope standing for the Anthem shows solidarity as a nation, that we stand united in respect for the people on the front lines protecting our freedom and keeping us safe. God bless those men and women.

I see a current head coach whose days are numbered in Pittsburgh.

I understand why they did it. They were told whatever they did they all had to do it together. They couldn't come to an agreeement on kneeling/standing so they chose to stay in tunnel. Villanueva said he was going to stand at attention no matter what.
I think Villanueva coming out made it look much worse for them.

Because they lost to Chicago? Maybe.
Because of the anthem? Doubt it.

Don't get me wrong, I think Tomlin and the team were trying to remain apolitical, but their choice of action would be seen as a slight no matter how they try to explain it.
They chose to stay in the tunnel. One man came out and stood. That also made them appear to be protesting, whether he wanted that or not.
Just poor optics despite good intentions.

so they chose to stay in tunnel
we're protesting, but not really.
the normal routine is to stand out on the field for the anthem. that's how you refuse to participate in the charade. instead they offered up a new charade.
and their fans gave them the business.

Villanueva really fricked their intentions. I find that pretty fascinating.

You had the one ex-military member come out and stand alone.
This looked as if he was in defiance of the team decision and made the rest appear to be protesting.

Really was a no win situation yesterday. Once you have players saying they will kneel if they are on the field, there is an unsolvable problem.

he knows it's a sinking ship. He's just jumping off. Others will follow.

You clearly haven't seen the fan reaction in the Pittsburgh area. It is 1000% worse than the fan reaction in New Orleans.

yea, fair enough.
Just noting that they didnt come out because they did not want to be seen sitting in protest.
I understand what Villanueva did, and it is commendable. The great thing about football is these guys went out and played side by side. If only America could co-exist with others despite different opinions

Why can't everyone just go out, stand, and show some respect like they have the last 60 fricking years?

Tomlin made that call, but I doubt he'll be blamed for it. The owner or GM could have overridden his decision.
I think it was a mediocre idea that just kind of flopped - I don't think Tomlin had any malice with it.
