It's time to pack the River Center

The Baton Rouge Zydeco announced Tuesday that the team is entering its third season with a new head coach.

A native of Quebec, Canada, Sylvain Cloutier joins the Zydeco after a more than two-decade-long playing career in professional hockey. Cloutier was a third-round pick in the 1992 NHL Draft, playing seven games with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1998-99 season

Hard to get excited about a team when the owner sells its best players at the end of the season to other teams he owns that have a better chance at to making a playoff run. Doesn't matter who the coach is to start the year....he won't be there at the end. Hope I'm wrong. Sucks, because BR has supported this team well, but the product has been complete dogshit.

The league is terrible. Would be cool if any of these southern markets could be an attractive affiliate location in one of the better leagues.

The ECHL was and is a great league, but outside of Lafayette late 90s/early 2000s hockey happened in the wrong era in the South. An ECHL with the same I-10 rivalry setup would be huge today.

IIRC they've got one more year on their lease with the River Center. I hope we can pull off at least 1 playoff win, preferably hosting inside the River Center.

If Houston and Atlanta get expansion teams there could be more AHL and ECHL teams in the south.

Biloxi and Laffy would be good candidates.

Barry is not the controlling owner anymore. He's pretty much been evicted from owning multiple teams in the league because he was a glorified hockey slumlord.

We've got a new controlling owner, new GM, and now new Head Coach. Things are moving in the right direction.

So...long story short, get excited.

ETA: And yes. the league is terrible. They could start improving it by forcing players to honor trades. But they let them pick and choose where they land, and teams get nothing in return, while other teams stack themselves with talent. It's happened to the Zydeco at least 5 times in the last 2 years.

Did we keep the Asian player? I watched him put an old fashioned whoopin on some guy this past season

He's not a good hockey player. Likely won't be back.

There was a reason the 5 players they announced they had re-signed were all forwards.

Hopefully they can find some decent defenders this season.

Oh I expect to see a whole new defensive structure. And that includes wholesale D personnel changes.

As far as the forwards go, I would love to see them hang on to Aleksanyan and Esposito (the college kid) as well. 2 youngsters with a lot of potential.
