It's also an issue of personal responsibility to follow up with your prescribing doctor after your injury/recovery & let them know what you're dealing with. And it's an issue of professional (as well as moral) responsibility for the doctor to ween their patient OFF of opioids.

As someone that’s been an athletic trainer and lives in a state with a huge opioid crisis (and a substance abuse minor in undergrad), half the problem has been the doctors handing out meds like they’re candy and being facilitated by companies producing those drugs for profit. I saw it all of the time in sports and outside of it as well. Someone with the right variables can easily become addicted to opioids when prescribed for something as normal as recovery from a medical procedure. And it can go downhill incredibly fast.

There are literally successful lawsuits over this against opioid manufacturers. Our AG just won one recently for millions in compensation that they knowingly pushed those drugs without potential addiction warnings.

I think it’s premature to assume he was addicted to fentanyl or anything for that matter.

No way his teammates are that overcome and word doesn’t leak out if this dude was addicted to anything.

Professional locker rooms tend to keep problems in house. They wouldn't have said shite if they knew, other than to his face to try to help him.

If he was taking fentanyl with oxy and alcohol, I think you can assume that's regular behavior for him. That's not a rookie move.

To me, it is definitely less sad than had he been murdered or had some unknown birth defect that caused his death.

Doesn't make him the devil or even a basic bad person but stupid decisions lead to bad outcomes.

Oh shite, you're definitely an expert on this case and know everything about it.

I guess the rest of us will bow out so you can just talk to yourself.

It makes it even worse that you're trying to act like you're an expert yet think this guy ODd on his first time taking opioids.

He could absolutely be popping pills under the guise of recovering from injury in a 100+ game a season grind and be functional. It happens all of the time.

Agreed. I was for sure it was an undetected birth defect or something of the sort.

Yet MLB praises this guy like he was some sort of hero. MLB and the Angles should have waited before building him up.

If your an addict, this is usually how it ends. Save the hero worship for a cop, soldier, firemen, nurse or teacher

I have taken opioids before. Fentyal is the nuke bomb of drugs. If you are taking that shite, you have a major problem. You are playing with fire and alone are to blame. Any mother fricker taking that shite you need to be suspect of. They are up to no good.

No one did this.

They simply expressed grief that a 27 year old died and held memorials during games for their fallen teammate and friend. Like anyone would do if they lost someone close to them, regardless of how he died.

I swear this board is full of morons.

Likely not even close to his first time, but you jump to addiction

Convenient for you in some way, b/c you can relate to that I guess

No way he just accidentally overdosed using shite recreationally. I mean, he (you) need an excuse. His demons as a professional ballplayer finally won.

Fentanyl is going to be the straw that broke the camel's back on this whole drug war. Especially if it is in high end drugs used by the rich.

which it is

I didn't read the article, but I'd assume by this headline he was doing coke that was cut with fentanyl. It's being used everywhere in this regard. Dangerous times to even just do a little on a bachelor party. Stay away from it baws. Stick to the reefer.

Admittedly I don't know a ton about the various painkillers and such, so the following statement may be way off base. My first instinct when fentanyl is involved is to wonder if the person taking the drugs knew they were taking fentanyl.
