Cheated out of it how? There was no BCS then.

Because of this. We were cheated out of Colorado vs. Georgia Tech in '90, Washington vs. Miami in '91, Auburn vs. FSU in '93, Nebraska vs. Penn State in '94. That run was why the BCS had to happen. Auburn and FSU were the two teams playing the best ball that year. Even without the probation, we still would have been cheated.

The SEC in 1993 wasn’t the SEC as we know it. Hell, 4/6 in the West weren't over .500.

The west wasn't great, but the SEC was still strong. It was definitively stronger in the East with UT and Florida rising. Bama had just come of a title in '92, Florida was about to make a couple of title game appearances and Tennessee won in '98. It wasn't the established SEC we had after 2000, but it was well on it's way.

Auburn's 2004 claim is more valid than Bama's 2011 "title."

False. USC is the only valid 2004 champion because it still has the AP title. Alabama won the AP and BCS titles in 2011.

Nearly 15 years and still ate up about it. That title is a gift that keeps on giving.

You can’t be cheated out of something that was never going to be on the table.

True.

These were never going to happen anyway with the Rose Bowl. It wasn’t a blip on the radar. You are right, this spurred the BCS on, but I wouldn’t say we were cheated out of something that was never gonna happen.

Auburn didn't make a bowl game in 57 or 58 because they were on probation

Exactly. 2003 should have been USC vs LSU. Oklahoma got prisonsex'd in the Big 12 title game and remained number 1 in the BCS. USC finished the regular season number 1 in both polls. USC has a legit claim. 2004 USC and Oklahoma went wire to wire 1 and 2. Auburn had a great year but they were never going to jump the consensus top 2 teams in the country. While previous seasons results shouldn't be a factor it can not be ignored that USC went 2-0 against Auburn the previous two seasons and would have been a big favorite against Auburn that year.

Only the AP or Coaches/BCS titles were valid during those years.

Or pretty much all-time until the Playoff.

We had a two-tiered vote with perceived "authority" by the public...AP Poll run continuously since 1936 (national sportswriters covering the sport) and the Coaches Poll since the 50s (from those in the game).

BCS wasn't a "new" Award....it was just the same old Coaches Poll while the AP remained independent from the Bowl Coalition mandates...ergo, split national titles, same as before.

I do agree claiming things like 58 cheapens the legit claims on 83 and 04. 1913 i don't have a problem with claiming though it's so long ago i don't really care

I guess it's good for the mental health for auburn fans and the majority of other fans simply don't care. No one seriously thinks auburn has won 9 national titles. the 6-1 1910 season is my favorite personally...I mean...wow

Jmo 83 and 04 would have looked fine, and as an LSU fan I would have already claimed them if it were the case for LSU. Most LSU fans indirectly claim 1908 (10-0 season), but at least they went undefeated, won double digit games, and beat everyone 50-0.

The funniest thing is Auburn claiming a National Title (1993) while on Probation and banned by the NCAA and YET claiming a National Title BECAUSE USC was retroactively forfeited wins by the NCAA.

Auburn used to have some class in these matters compared to their in-state rival...now its a shameless white flag rewriting history...if you can't beat '\em, join Alabama, unapologetic and undaunted in absurdity (see Alabama claiming a National Title over Notre Dame despite losing to (11-0) Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl...I guess, like Alabama, 1993 Auburn can be regular season champs, no Bowl win...CFB and common sense, a long history of being adversaries.

Auburn was on probation in 57 and 58, too. But the NCAA can't vacate a championship it doesn't award. It's called FBS because the NCAA doesn't recognize a true champion. The AP and BCS were not part of the NCAA.

If the AP wanted to vote an 0-11 team #1 they could, in theory. The BCS used a formula to decide the 2 teams and let them play for it.

Double post but many teams claim a title when they lost the bowl game, it's not limited to Alabama.

1950 Oklahoma
1953 Maryland
1970 Texas

But all those teams, including 1973 Alabama were at least voted #1 in a final poll according to the rules of the time. Those are a few of them. Tennessee claims 1967 and they lost 2 games and weren't voted #1 at all.

What's funny is before this Auburn had 1 undisputed claim. Now they...still have just 1 undisputed claim.

7 Alabama
4 Notre Dame Ohio State
3 Florida Georgia Miami Michigan Nebraska Oklahoma Texas
2 Clemson Florida State LSU Pitt
1 Auburn BYU Georgia Tech Maryland Penn State Tennessee USC
