You guys know what would have been better for Atlanta? Trading up to draft QB Jake Haener in the 4th round last year and then following that up by drafting QB Rattler in the 5th round this year. That would have been such a better VALUE play!

Not true. A longer version has been released and he was clearly celebrating with everyone before walking over to the GM

The fact that you consistently ignore the salary cap part of this like a retard is pretty telling.

If veteran QBs got paid commensurate to their performance instead of resetting the market every single time a big contract is signed, you might have a point.

You need a top 15-20 QB to make a run and Atlanta paid what they needed to get that guy. Slice it any way you want but they got a really nice QB room when QB is the most important position in sports.

It depends on what they're getting paid. Have you ever looked at the list of Super Bowl winning QBs since the rookie wage scale was implemented? If not, here you go.

2012: Flacco - Last year of his rookie deal (signed pre-rookie wage scale so wasn't super cheap, but was not near the top end of QB salaries that season)
2013: Wilson - Rookie deal
2014: Brady - ALWAYS signed contracts well below market value to allow the team to put a better roster around him, which was the single most underrated part of New England's dynasty
2015: P. Manning - That Broncos defense was next level elite
2016: Brady
2017: Wentz/Foles - Wentz was on a rookie deal, Foles was on a backup salary
2018: Brady
2019: Mahomes - Rookie deal
2020: Brady
2021: Stafford - His base salary that season was $1M. The Rams structured that contract to give themselves a one year window to really go for it and they got it.
2022: Mahomes - The only QB to win AFTER getting paid top tier QB money
2023: Mahomes

To win a Super Bowl in this era, you have to have a GOAT tier QB (Mahomes, Brady, Manning) who leaves a little bit of money on the table or a good QB on a cheap contract.

The Falcons are willingly giving away at least 2 years of Penix's rookie contract and will have some Cousins dead money on the books in year 3 of his rookie deal. They will get to see him play for exactly one season before having to decide whether or not to pick up his 5th year option. They basically will have a one year window (2027) to win a Super Bowl with Penix before he gets expensive unless he turns out to be a GOAT tier QB, and I feel reasonably confident that Penix will never come close to being on the Mahomes/Brady tier.

The NFL builds in advantages for teams with good QBs on rookie contracts, and the Falcons are completely ignoring this like it's still 2001.

Lets ignore that you called both Kirk Cousins and Penix "great". Actually lets not. Its dovetails nicely with the rest of this inane bullshite you have thrown out trying to defend yourself throughout the thread.

I'm a Falcons fan, and former STH.

I would have much, much, much preferred any of the DEs or LBs at 8, and Rattler in 4th rd.

Penix isn't elite. He's not worth this kind of luxury pick. And it pisses off your starting QB, who you literally just signed.

I hate this team so much bros.

Fact that Blank was happy makes the pick that much dumber.

Penix was deemed as the best passer of the draft and as a better prospect than Maye by many. Many who argue it was a bad pick concede Pennix is worth a top 10 pick but just wasn’t the “right” pick for Atlanta. There’s no such thing as a “sure thing” in the NFL draft when it comes to QB, but the chances of finding a franchise QB outside of the top 10 picks are so slim and the likelihood of Atlanta getting another top 10 pick in ‘25 or ‘26 is very slim.

They have a 35 year old QB who’s essentially on an 2 year deal and a top 10 pick rookie QB who they can develop in the meantime. It’s close to a perfect situation but since people haven’t seen this exact scenario before and everyone thinks they’re Billy Beane capable of allocating resources with maximum efficiency they can’t help but all join together and pretend to be “smarter” than giving yourself a great QB situation.

Dude, if you believe Dallas Turner is some sort of defensive savior then so be it. I do t think he’s nearly as good as the guy the Falcons took in the 3rd. Just because he played on national TV every week for Bama and benefited from being surrounded by studs doesn’t make him worth the #8 pick. Heck he was taken at 17 so I guess all those other GM’s are stupid as well. The Falcons absolutely addressed their defensive needs.

Penix has to become Mahomes level good for this move to work.

My favorite part of this whole saga is that people are justifying it by automatically making Penix one of the top QBs in the league when he starts years from now.

I'm a fan of his, but what if he sucks arse? It feels like that never comes up in the discussion.

If the Falcons didn't feel that Turner was worth a #8 pick, the move should have been to trade down and get another 2nd, or multiple 3rd round picks and stock up that way.

Trade down to a lower 1st round pick, take the best DL/edge available at the time, then draft another in the 2nd, and so on. I actually think they did pretty well with the rest of the picks, but the Penix pick just doesn't make a whole lot of sense with Cousin's new contract.

Maybe they're planning on cutting him after year 2 when Cousin's payout would drop to $12.5MM from $40. Or they'll use Penix for trade bait, but either of those is just way more risky than trading down for more picks.

Blank has always struck me as a nice gentleman who deserves better from his team.

I hope he gets a SB win before he passes on.
