It really isn't. I doubt the ref spots the ball with more than 1 sec left by the time they clear the pile

Detroit was gifted A LOT this game. Two picks that could have easily been receptions but tipped. Some questionable calls late in the game to extend the drive...

Originally not even looking at a replay that it was a clear touch down and a Detroit W. I see the knee down on the replay though. It's extremely close. Saints fans watching the game with me agreed.

The 10 sec runoff rule sucks in that situation though. Pretty wild way to end a game.

Why can't both of those scenarios be dumb?

Fair point but they have to go with 1 or the other.

But I think the :10 run off is completely logical.

When the entire team is near the goal line they could have easily lined up in 4-5 seconds. They got screwed.

Count out loud to 4-5 seconds. You have would-be chaos about not knowing whether it was in, you have receivers who just ran routes and are all over the field. The ball also has to be spotted. Lining up in a legal formation doesn't happen in that 4-5 seconds. Sorry. There's enough tape out there of offenses failing to come close to that when packed near the goal line.

And that's before the play call is conveyed by Stafford amidst the chaos.

Of course.

Think about the WR who caught the ball, absolutely no way he's going to be ready in :08 or less. He's going to be selling the TD and not even realizing it's not a TD for at least 5 or more seconds, at the very very least.

You also have your entire life's worth of watching games and have never seen a team run a play after a down like that anywhere near 4-5 seconds.

If his knee touched the ground it happened when it was blocked by an Atlanta players helmet and the refs would NOT have had indisputable evidence to overturn it.

See pictures...

This is the only moment that his knee could have touched the ground but 45's helmet is blocking the view to prove it.

When the helmet finally does clear, u can see daylight between his knee and the turf.

At this point his thigh and elbow are down. But no one is touching him...

He's still not touched unless 23 is touching on the back side of his helmet and the ball has broken the plane...

This is the exact moment his helmet moves from 23's hand touching him. No one else is touching him. Ball CLEARLY over the plane...
