Wasn’t Malloy supposedly the next phenom to rush through the minors? Not sure I like this move.

I don't think phenom, like I wouldn't put him in the same stratosphere as Harris and was even a ways behind Grissom, but there is a lot of potential to like from him as a hitter.

I’ve read he has potential, but doesn’t have a “defensive home”, which is not really the kind of dude we want. I guess.

He began as a 3B, but was moved to LF when he got the call up to Mississippi. I don't think he was anything special defensively, but wasn't really a liability either. Like, he didn't move to the OF because he couldn't play 3B, he moved out there because it was the easiest way to get him on the field.

Gotcha. Hopefully this is the first of a few solid moves that pay off in 2023.

In a vacuum, it's a weird move to give up one of your best non-pitching prospects for a rental reliever with a career negative WAR. Last season was Jimenez' best season and it was ok.

I’m thankful for the team friendly deals that AA’s approach has wrought, but shopping the bargain bin rarely pays off like it did in 2021. I guess we’ll see what happens. I do tire of watching division opponents get objectively better while we make moves like this, but I’m no expert. We’re still the team those teams are collectively losing their minds chasing.

Yeah, this is a pretty crap deal IMO, not impressed. Could have used Malloy in LF or DH as soon as the end of this season. If he was moved in a larger deal for a SS or OF that would be one thing, but it's pretty baffling to give him up for reliever.

It’s an arms race. Mets get Verlander, Phillies get Turner, and Braves get Joe Jimenez.

Mets problem was hitting. They haven't improved in that front at all yet, unless I missed something. Phillies will be legit. fricking turner owns us.

This Braves team is pretty well constructed as is. Of course you want to improve as much as you can, but when 6 of the 8 position players are locked up long term it will limit your splash potential I would think.

Need to figure out LF, SS, and get more arms.

I feel confident we would be fine if we didn't add another piece.

The 2 teams in the NLCS just got better without losing anyone. Granted, those contracts are absurd. But it will hurt them mainly when the this Braves window will be closing. Mets TOR is ridiculous. Dodgers are still the Dodgers. Gonna be an interesting few years in the NL.

Meh, Schezer is old and losing the durability that he once had. Verlander obviously had a great year last year, but would be surprised to see him repeat that, especially in the NL east. Quintana doesn't scare me as a LH. Plus like I said, I don't think they will be able to score enough when it matters. Dodgers and Phillies will be tough for sure. Padres look good on offense and bullpen, not sure how their rotation looks.

That’s just depressing. It is more of the same bullshite bargain bin shopping for middling to low caliber players and hoping they catch fire.

That’s why I don’t believe we have all this extra money just waiting for the right deal like some posters on here insist we do.

I understand some of these teams have outrageous contracts with certain players, but look at these projected lineups:

Padres
C Austin Nola
1B Jake Cronenworth
2B Ha-Seong Kim
3B Manny Machado
SS Xander Bogaerts
LF Fernando Tatis Jr
CF Trent Grisham
RF Juan Soto
DH TBD

Phillies
C J.T. Realmuto
1B Rhys Hoskins
2B Bryson Stott
3B Alec Bohm
SS Trea Turner
LF Kyle Schwarber
CF Matt Vierling
RF Nick Castellanos
DH Bryce Harper

Those are brutal lineups for a pitcher to face.

This one is weird. AA does seem to have a blind spot when it comes to valuing relief pitching though. For everything great he has done, this seems like a bad one.

ETA: Trading JHM for a middle reliever rental could actually turn out to be horrendously bad.

Yep, you're basically looking at an all-star lineup. I know the Padres may have some contract issues with Machado and Soto in the next couple of years. But I see no reason to think they won't offer them $300 million deals.
No idea on what the Phillies contracts look like but I'm sure they have most of those for the next few years at least.

I keep telling myself that the deal netted us a free spot on the 40-man, so maybe that means something else is coming that doesn’t involve a trade.

Yeah this one makes less and less sense the more I think about it unless the team had just completely soured on Henry-Malloy for whatever reason. I thought there was a decent chance he would play some left field for the Braves this season.

AA just traded the best hitting prospect in the system (for a team that is going to need cheap, pre arb talent soon) for one year of a reliever who had a good season last year but has not had a good career besides that. This feels like a move you make at the deadline if you're going all in and this is your last shot at a title.
