Are there any HS officials on this board? How hard to be football official?

Now that the kids are in college, I have thought of being a high school football official. Has anyone else done it?

I know that money isn't much and everyone will hate you, but it seems like a good way to see some great football and help out.

Besides that, it is a great gig!

I have never done it, but have a few friends who have. You REALLY have to love the game and the kids to do it.

My neighbor officiates hs baseball and football. He played baseball at UNO and in the minors briefly, and it's a way for him to still be in the game.

There is way more money in being an umpire than a football. When I looked into it a few years back, in Louisiana you had to spend the first season in the press box.

I did it when I got out of college

I went to “clinic“ with all the other officials in my area a few weeks before the season began. Obviously, you have to know the rulebook. Clinic is where you learn the minor differences in rules between pro and HS.

I took a rules test, passed and was officiating JV games soon thereafter. In my area you needed two years of JV experience before you would get booked for varsity games.

I ump’d baseball when I was in high school and a little in college.

Money was solid, but no chance I’d do it now. I had to tell parents/coaches to frick off in normal games, pitching machine and t-ball a decade ago. I can only imagine travel ball parents are 10x worse today.

Football isn’t bad with parents because you’re not that close to the stands and there aren’t that many difficult plays. Since there are fewer games, a little less money, but it’s fun to be part of a crew. I always enjoyed being out on the field. If you do any other sports, varsity softball is the way to go because the games go quickly and has a faster pace than baseball, plus the strike zone is larger. I’ve been out for a few years but I may get back into it again soon. It just sucks working the lower, younger levels where the skill, and parents, are worse.

Depends on the state. Georgia pays fairly well and you just have to reach out to them.

I'm in year nine of football and will begin year ten of baseball next spring.

I really enjoy it. As others have pointed out, the first year in football will likely be in the pressbox running a clock on Friday nights. However, there are plenty of on-field opportunities for sub-varsity (JV, Jr. High, etc.) and depending on which area of the state you are in, you may be needed once or twice for a Friday night on the field if you show promise in the lower level games.

Click here to find contact information for your area's assignment secretary.

If you have any questions, leave me your e-mail and I'll shoot you a message, and try to answer.

Not hard... all the associations are looking for people.

It's good to call youth games to get experience, but the parents and coaches are absolutely awful.

Did baseball and football for 15+ years and got out a couple years back. Became more of a hassle than anything. Meetings, clinics,Etc. And also some associations are very political.

I’m with the LHSAA. I umpire baseball and in a previous life did football and basketball.

If you have a pulse, you can officiate. Ring up your closest association, attend the free classes and clinics. They will put you with experienced guys but you’ll start with really really bad ball.

It’s not hard, and if you enjoy the sport, you’ll do really well. I’m probably the youngest guy in my association at 30. I do games with some OLD DOGS but they are fun.
