Bill Polian piece needs its own thread.

Why keep him around when you can get another guy knowing he won't affect the cash flow but he also won't keep bringing back bad PR for your league.
Simpler question is why get rid of him when keeping him doens't affect the bottom line.
They like Goodell. It's a boys club. It's a group of old rich people that are fiercely loyal to each other for the most part.

everyone has a limit to their loyalty

I wonder if Roger is having any conversations with Ray Rice......like.....Ray just be quiet for a little while and I will make sure you end up on the team of your choice.
If I'm Rice or his wife, I am suing the league. I don't know if he could win or if there is even a case to be made. But Rice definitely lost more money short term and possibly even long term. His suspension went from 2 games to indefinite. I would sue the league if I were him.

ray knows definitively...you know when you're getting punished, they tell you. I saw the tape and...blah blah blah. He's been told to shut up and he'll be back in a year, say anything and he'll never be reinstated

Good analogy.
I agree but we haven't reached that point yet.

Not to belabor the fact, but regarding the advertisements from Coke/McD's/etc., I would imagine just the simple threat of they walking would be enough to pressure the owners for new NFL management. None of those companies want to support (ie. give $$) to a commish who, in many women's eyes, minimized this situation.

But at some point, you gotta wonder if you can trust the guy to handle these tough items, and we're way past the point of realizing he can't be trusted to do that.
So they could keep him around for the reasons you said, and very well may if they can find a scapegoat here, but they'll then run the risk of him doing something that is actually harming the bottom line in the future.

They're going to sacrifice the lowest person on the totem pole that they can. They aren't going to start at the top.
It may ultimately end with Goodell but I think that's a last resort for them, not a first option.

bingo, nor do they rely on their sponsorship of the NFL,
have you ever heard of Extreme Networks or Dairy Management, Inc.?
you think Microsoft, anheuser busch, pepsi co, procter and gamble, etc...rely on advertisements run during NFL games and having their name attached to a halftime highlight?
no, it's great exposure, but some of those companies are pretty big...anheuser busch does almost $5 billion in sales, mcdonalds over 5 billion... sure they're not the giant the NFL is, but collectively, they dwarf them, and they all have brand power to swing around while the nfl is floating in the water...and bleeding

quote:If he stays on as commissioner what kind of credibility will Goodell have during the next players bargaining agreement? As far as public perception is concerned he has lost all credibility. I thought the NBA commissioner Stern was a slimy POS but Goodell is about to surpass him.

So anyone in Authority is basically a POS, right?

Just listened to Troy Aikman on this issue.
He is pretty critical of the commissioner.

This is a really good way of putting it.
He's proven himself to be untrustworthy and incompetent now, so why leave him in charge and risk him making a more serious blunder?

I am SO tired of this story. Domestic violence happens everyday in this country by the everyday JOE who goes to work and gets home and him and the wife get into it and he slugs her [or worse]... But THAT doesn't bring up this kind of coverage...... What he did was just as wrong as the next guy. Its the NFL and the MEDIA is hyping this as much as they can just to get ratings.....

I was tired of the story before it even started. I do find it hilarious that Ravens fans are apparently still wearing Rice jerseys and supporting him
