any tragic stories that involve kids make me feel sick

Look no further than that ding-dong-ditch thread to see how emboldened people can be on the internet when they didn’t have any personal connection with strangers
There’s an innate sense of detachment from things outside our bubble to keep us from going insane; some clowns just take that and run with it in lieu of trying to achieve any real empathy.
Empathy is learned and uncomfortable - two things that a lot of people avoid like the plague.

Never rooted for Kobe a single game his entire career. He and his lakers were the primary foil for my Spurs (and vice versa, by Kobe's own words). When I say I hate the lakers, he and Shaq are the first villains that pop into my mind. But primarily him--he was frighteningly driven, to an otherworldly degree. All pro athletes are hyper competitive, but he was a cut above even in that small circle.
But I grew up watching him become and remain larger than life. Literally went from boyhood to manhood to becoming a husband and a father, all while this supervillain (from an SA perspective) waged war with my own childhood heroes like Tim Duncan. It's almost like a Joker dynamic--your own hero's accomplishments would be somehow....lesser....without them as a foil. That abject hatred waxes into grudging respect as time passes and you mature.
The fatherhood aspect is what gets me the most, though. Watching him throw himself into that role as I'm learning to do the same...it's just an unconscionable tragedy to fathom now. My heart aches for that whole family. The sports world lost an icon. They lost SO much more.

Im starting to think maybe I am not surprised at how people are upset over this, but moreso how people ARENT upset when they read about other people dying
The difference is Kobe wasn't some random good dad. He was in the public eye for over 25 years. He gets all the feels of a random plus the fact we kind of grew up with him to some extent.

See, what does this mean? He was being a dad. Why is "that so impressive?"
I just dont get why we have to oversell some things
I think any good father is impressive. I don't limit it to just celebrities.

I certainly don't
I feel no need to torture myself like that

I will get downvoted, but I dont care
I am personally surprised by how many people are "truly upset" about this
I am borderline mad at the people who are "truly upset". I cant stand overly dramatic immature internet people. Drives me up the wall. Hyperbole on hyperbole on hyperbole. Chill out.
How fricking great and painless must your life be for this to be that fricking brutal and shocking to yo?
"Ive never been this shocked!"
"Im devastated."
Well then, you should really keep that to yourself because its not a good look to go and rub your good fortune in people's face.
Bro this isnt the in the top 1000 most upsetting things thats ever happened to me.
Look, it sucks and my human side is sadder than it was before learning it. Id say for me its weirder than anything else. Its weird that Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash yesterday.

Well said as always, friend.

but I turn on sports radio for the past 24 hrs and hosts are literally weeping on air... And I juts don't get it.
OK, the guy was a great entertainer, but did you know him personally? Most on these shows didn't
quote:No, they're not. If their family members died, they would very likely not be able to remotely keep it together, you're drawing some weird comparison that doesn't make any sense.
yet they're acting as if their own family member died. It's really and truly bizarre and strange.
quote:How many of those guys have been in our sports lives for over half of our lives and how many have we dedicated 100s of hours of our lives to to watch and discuss?
Guys die every day in the military and on police forces and no one shows 1/100th of the remorse.
quote:So the sports show should not be mourning the death of the sports athlete that is probably the biggest sports death of all time?
Dan Patrick was extra nauseating this morning. He said his whole show was basically in mourning.
I have no clue what you're going for here, to be honest.

Agreed. It's one of those things that's what's supposed to happen, yet is still incredibly inspiring to watch happen.

You're shocked that people are shocked by the most shocking sports death of all time.
The most shocking thing thats ever happened to them?
Theyve literally never known someone that died. Thats what that would have to mean. And if they are more affected by the death of a celebrity than someone they know, then i weep for society.

But man, this shite really got to me. Maybe it’s because I’m a dad and you could really tell how much fun he was having being a father, parent-coach, mentor, etc.
I think this is what got me. I'm not a dad or anything, but I could tell that he was REALLY enjoying retirement and being a father. And anytime I saw a video/picture of Kobe it was him with his kids, particularly Gianna. So that just makes it so heartbreaking to me.

The most shocking thing thats ever happened to them?
I've been glued to this entire event and on social media as well. I haven't seen it once.
Certainly not saying no one is saying that, but I don't know that enough are saying that for you to really take that much of an interest, other than maybe that 1 random dude you don't know on Twitter that said it.

quote:Another thing, in fairness your first comment here was to say, "I don't care" but then you've conceded you get a little emotional about the story about the random Mom in Boise, Idaho.
But if I actually read the article where it talks about the family etc etc, I would have the same level of shite bucket in my stomach
So whether you meant it or not, you insinuate the random story had more of an effect on you than the Kobe story.

That or you're just following the wrong people on social media.
