I know Kobe didn’t speak to his parents for selling his memorabilia. At the end of the day they were his parents and he had two sisters. Out of everybody who spoke only Shaq acknowledged them by saying he was a son and a brother. I know before he died Kobe and his dad started talking again working on their relationship.

I didn't realize there was a required checklist of people that had to be acknowledged.

From all accounts, it's a pretty complicated situation. They were estranged when he married Vanessa. They also tried to sell some of his memorabilia behind his back. They weren't invited to his jersey retirement in 2017. But they were in attendance at the public memorial service. At least one of his sisters attended the private funeral.

I'm not shocked people avoided that landmine at a public service.

It still isn’t clear to me why they became estranged. All because he married a Hispanic woman?

It's probably more telling that Vanessa didn't, if she didn't. Were they in attendance?

I think I've read that Kobe's parents felt he was too young and that she was a jersey chaser. Another version of the story is that her parents didn't want her marrying Kobe. So who knows.

Kobe’s mom didn’t want him getting married at the age of 21 being young in the nba and she was straight out of high school. After they had their first daughter they became close again. Back around 2013 or so, his parents sold $500,000 worth of his early memorabilia without him knowing and he was pissed and stopped talking to them. They apologized for what they did but the damage was done.

Why are you disrespected? It was a very nice memorial and you are trying to pull negative from it...go outside find something to do.

yes but they made up some after their first kid was born. They continued having problems but a lot of that is bc Kobe was so DAMN petty. Let's not pretend like he was as mature as he was a great bball player. He was one of the most childish, petty NBA players ever. EVER.

Found it a bit phony considering the high praise Kobe has received for mentoring his daughter. Jellybean mentored young Kobe & not even a mention? Kobe spoke of Joe breaking down game film & teaching him the importance of using his left hand.

Shaq claims he hadn't really spoke to Kobe since 2016. Most of the " friends" speaking at the memorial seemed to be mutual admirers/ acquaintances at best. But Jellybean , No mention.

They said it the whole time- the memorial was just as much about Gianna as it was Kobe. That’s why all the women’s basketball speakers.

I understand ,but these people are still barely aquaintances & met Kobe & Gianna briefly on occasions. Shaq, 4 years since they've spoken & I doubt Kobe saw MJ or hung out with him much over the past 2 decades.

The dad who mentored Kobe (like Kobe did with Gianna)? Nothing . The parents ( Joe & Pam) who raised such a well rounded man? Nothing.
