That was an amazing game. TO was entering his prime and Jerry Rice was at the tail end of his career. JJ Stokes was a huge part of that game as was Antonio Freeman for the Packers.

Every analyst has said the same thing in games almost verbatim.
I've heard it said a million times "Saints need a touchdown to win FG won't win it."
Nothing's changed.

My favorite is after an INT. "He wishes he had that one back"

I think it boiled down to what was considered professional commentating back then.

Showing emotion or enthusiasm could be misconstrued as showing favoritism and it's a commentators job to remain neutral.

Plus, the NFL was different in the 80’s and 90’s. There wasn’t as much fluctuation from year to year.

The NFC was king, and the 49ers and Packers met the previous year in the NFC Championship game. If Madden and Summerall were in the booth, then it was a huge game. He didn’t need to overhype the game or step on Madden’s toes. He let the game and moments breathe.

Fox has been playing these older games on the weekends. Last week it was the 94 Cowboys-49er NFC Championship game.
