Gino winning it was the biggest joke ever.

BTW, I do not agree that the Heisman is a "joke" or that ESPN has taken it over. I'm glad to watch the presentation on ESPN (when I do watch) because I remember when it wasn't televised at all. If you think ESPN is so bad, think about life without it. No SportsCenter, no NFL Live, no Game Day, only FoxSports-which should change its name to FoxSucks, no NFL draft coverage, no Monday Night Football for that matter, etc., etc.

There is no way I'm gonna complain about ESPN. I couldn't live without it.

It's the most prestigious award in college football. Period. I don't like the "sponsored by Nissan" crap any more than the next guy, but I still wouldn't throw out that cool trophy if I earned one.

maybe not necessarily a joke, but it certainly has lost a lost of its' prestige. and ESPN has become a major factor in deciding who wins it.

not hating on ESPN, they're a great channel and all but it's disgusting how much influence they exert on college football every year.

Really? What award is more prestigious?

I mean besides a purple heart, which I pretty sure has always been a notch above.

Manning got screwed?? Yeah, he performed brilliantly versus Florida that year.

Woodson on the other hand, is the main reason why his team beat their rival OSU, and won the AP Championship.

Wouldn't be Heisman time if somebody didn't bring up 97

I mean, he was HORRIBLE against Florida that year, oh by the way...he NEVER beat them in his career (0-4).

Woodson intercepted a pass for a TD and ran back a punt for a TD versus Ohio St. and shut down David Boston.

Why do people insist on Manning winning this award????

I tried to make a joke about that earlier, but I don't think anyone got it.

Because they don't remember what really happened. They see him as a pro and translate that to his college career. Personally, I don't think post-college success/development, etc. should play into the Heisman discussion.

100% agree with you. I followed Tennessee a lot that year, keep in mind Manning was on the front cover of S.I. that year for the pre-season. Only Chris Rix from Florida State is the only QB starter to lose more games against a single team.( he was 0-5 versus Miami.)

My guess is that the posters who say Manning should have gotten the award maybe are too young to remember the reality. Either that, or they've got selective memory.

My vote would have gone to Woodson that year.

I agree with those pretty much. And Larry Fitzgerald should've won it as well if it's for the most outstanding player.

Well it's not just the pro career, a lotta ppl bitch about Manning because the Heisman also has a way of being a lifetime achievement award at times. I wish they had given Champ Bailey more consideration in 98 though. Woodson was the 3rd WR, and sometimes used more as a decoy. Champ actually led UGA in receiving and was a starter (in addition to being an All America CB and returning kicks).

I agree with that. He was one of my favorites during his college career.
