Note that Sandusky was not a member of the coaching staff when this took place.

he knew this guy hugged and fondled an 11 yr old in the psu showers in 1998 as it was admitted to by sandusky in court documents. then, he hears about sandusky raping a child in the shower in 2002 and merely reports it to the ad? give me a fricking break! paterno doesnt wonder why the rapist keeps showing up on campus? paterno continues to interact with this rapist until he's investigatedf for an incident in 2009? paterno needs to drop dead under this cloud of shame.
Keep in mind that Paterno was about 106 years old in 2002, so we should cut him some slack. :)

I don't give a shite who he was or where he worked. If McQueary saw a homeless man raping a kid in the Penn State shower, he should have beat his arse, or at least called the police. He did neither, and apparently didn't even tell Paterno until the next day.
If Paterno had knowledge of such a crime being committed in facilities he is charge of, regardless of who did it, he should have called the police.
I have a boss. Most people do. However, it is comical to think that if I saw a child being raped in my building that I would call my boss, rather than the police.

I'm disheartened by those who offer up "paterno did all he was legally required to do."

Yes I don't understand why McQueary at that time just didn't knock the living crap out of Sandusky. Because McQueary failed to take action, there is no evidence. There is no victim (no identified) and it's going to be harder for the AG to convict.
As for Paterno, there is a difference between what has to be done and what should have been done. If Mcqueary indeed told him all the details, then he should have driven McQueary directly to the police station and let them handle it.

BTW not that this pertains to anything, but Sandusky and Paterno were not close friends. They didn't have dinner together, they didn't talk hardly at all. There was a report in the Centre county times years ago about their relationship and how Paterno only talked to Sandusky once in a 10 year period after he retired and that was a chance meeting.

maybe because of what Paterno knew and held silent about?

So he wasn't in denial because of his friendship with Sandusky. He was just trying to protect the program. Makes him a bigger piece of shite, imo.

im pretty sure paterno went to the head of university police (shultz);at least from what i gather...
so if shultz tells you that the situation has been taken care of / wasn't true, jopa is still supposed to go to the actual police anyways? hmm...i really dont think so.
there is a reason why shultz is facing perjury chargers here, while jopa is not (yet?) charged with anything.

It's very possible that he personally contacted him and reprimanded him privately.
oh, well that's a relief.

its easy to say we'd all do that, but you have no idea how'd react to seeing something horrible like that.

Its a lot harder for the DA that went missing

I've seen several posters stating that Paterno and Sandusky weren't "good friends" after he retired. If that truly is the case, why was Sandusky allowed into the PSU locker room in 2002 and as recently as last week as some media outlets are reporting?

He needs to be questioned as to why he didn't press the matter. Maybe he did maybe he didn't but I for one wouldn't just assume it was all taken care of knowing the POS is still free and walking around and still involved in a childrens charity.

Apparently, former Penn State coaches are extended certain courtesies such as the use of school facilities.
You'd think they would have revoked those once they had a good idea that this guy was a Chester.

I honestly think he was in denial when he heard the story from the GA...no way his long time friend could be a pedafile in his eyes. He did what his duty by reporting it to administration and felt it would go away...which it did for about 9 yrs which baffles me. It doesn't make what he did right...just trying to make sense of what the old man did.
oh, he knew way more than you think.......

Looks like Joe Pa just announced his retirement. This story keeps getting sadder by the day.
