re: Another American High Schooler Breaks the 4 Minute Mile!

I broke 5 minutes once in high school. I have no idea how it’s physically possible for a human being to break 4. Hell, a lot of not slow people can’t break 1 minute on one lap around the track. Doing that 4 times straight, insane.

For the average person 4:18 is fast as hell
The only context where its not "fast as hell" is college or professional middle distance runners. For the exceptional person 4:18 is unattainable. Even if its not fast enough for a scholarship to Arkansas or Oregon, its still fast as hell for a high school runner.

thats what were trying to say. its good but on the totem poll of elite runners its not great which is what we should be comparing this kid to not the average joe.
at the same time the kid went from good but not great to elite with one performance which is pretty awesome.

He should run a 2 minute mile and save half his energy.

Whats unusual is his PR was 4:18 before this race which is a decent time but nothing to write home about.
I don't see what's unusual about improving your time in essentially 2 seasons since he didn't race last year. Especially with a multi-olympic medalist coaching him.

What’s the Louisiana State record these days? I remember when Robbie LeBlanc from CHBR ran something like 4:07 my freshman year in high school.
Then I think Ryan Travis from Jewel Sumner got pretty close or broke that a year later??

It's just rare you see that big of a jump especially when you're talking about times in the low/sub 4's.

im not sure. unfortunately theres no good way to see the all time state records online. looks like the state meet record is a 4:12 flat from 1982

I'm sure it wouldn't have been such a jump if he had been running other races during this time, you'd probably see a more gradual push for it.
It is pretty cool he did it indoors though. I hated running at LSU in HS for indoors

i always hated indoor most throughout college. found it way too hard to fricking breathe

I disliked track period.
I was unable to convince the coach to let me keep my measly scholarship running cross country only, though.

It's about context. Thousands of people in America can run a 4:18 mile. Probably 10 can run sub 4.

That's averaging a 14.77 100M time over the course of a mile. That's a dead sprint for half this board
