Not sure if I'm following things correctly, but if the players want revenue sharing, and the league is subsidized by the NBA, wouldn't that make it inevitable that the NBA (those owners) just pull the plug? Doesn't that insure they lose even more money?

The WNBA has probably the best commissioner in sports when it comes to handling finances, she was the CEO at one of the largest accounting firms in the world and the league seems to be in great shape as far as attracting capital.

But it's like herding cats trying to align all the various owners and players and at a time when the league should be leveraging the progress it's made to continue to capitalize its future. Instead of being patient and realistic, everybody wants a free lunch.

I don't care about the actual games but the business is interesting as it can easily turn into an example of how to sabotage a good thing.

The quote in the picture doesn’t match the quote in the actual article you posted….

ummmm, from your post
quote:

Actual quote

if [the league] don’t give us what we want, we’re sitting out,"

quote:

Picture quote

'IF Y'ALL DON'T GIVE US WHAT WE WANT, WE SITTING OUT”

The only difference is "Y'all" was inserted instead of "the league" being inserted?

Okie dokie then. That changes everything. Because even she admits that she doesnt know whats being said. Bit she does think shes so important that she needs to be in there. A rookie. Righttttt

There are a few NBA owners who are subsidizing the League and will likely take her up on her offer. Go play in the 3 on 3 league down in Miami and fold up the WNBA. You guys have made it. We don’t have to subsidize you anymore! You own your own league now. Also hope the negotiations get contentious so we can have some of the financials leaked.

They just signed a new 2.2 billion dollar tv contract that’s starting in 2026. I know the Tigerdroppings crew is the dumbest of the dumbest, but you would have to be an absolute moron to not at least try to negotiate higher pay while these new tv money is happening.

Yes, the NBA did. But anything more the NBA owners give the WNBA players is solely because of public relations and DEI concerns. None of it will be for purely financial or business reasons.

The WNBA has not had any problem finding investment, It's seen as a chance to get in on a future growth industry even if valuations have increased. Capital is there wanting to get in but labor issues could change that.

I think youre wrong here.

60% of WNBA owners are also NBA owners.

They keep the profits from selling game tickets/concessions/merch(lol)/etc.

The league loses money, not the owners. Its set up that way on purpose.

The NBA signed a 76 billion dollar deal. I’m not sure what you are saying here. Are you saying the deal the WNBA signed isn’t real?

I’m saying the WNBA is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NBA that has existed solely because the NBA owners made the choice to subsidize its losses for 30 years.

quote:

"Despite the League's swelling costs and headcount, the budget materials provided by the League during its annual September budget review are limited in scope," the letter said. "Accordingly, to improve the League's financial transparency and operating efficiency, the Knicks propose that the League adopts a zero-based method of budgeting operating costs, capital expenditures, and headcount for all League operations and initiatives (including Affiliate Leagues, such as the Basketball Africa League, WNBA, and G League).

LINK

The people on the other side of the table of the WNBA players union will answer to the NBA which answers to the 30 owners of the NBA teams.

Revenue is the amount of money a business earns. It is the top line number. The total an entity brings in. Pride is correct. If it’s revenue sharing it is a win for the players. If it is profit sharing they won’t get a thing.

Yeah but you can't realistically expect to get revenue sharing from a company that is running in the red.

It's not.

The NBA itself owns about 40% and when people that own both NBA and WNBA teams are added in that bring it up to around 70%.

The WNBA has both wanted to raise money to stand on its own and depend on the NBA and dual owners, which has caused problems.

Who has the other 30%? Standalone WNBA owners?

Yes, standalone WNBA owners and the league raised $75 million a few years ago in an offering that included outside investors. So those investors own shares too.

That's the problem, you've got all these competing interests that want their piece of the pie without getting diluted when the league needs more investment to continue to grow until they maybe become profitable someday.

But the NBA and its owners still have a controlling interest. Point being is if the WNBA players overplay their hand, the NBA contingent could just cut them loose (let them strike) and let them try their hand in the open market without the collective NBA subsidy.

Let’s see what type of TV money that league down in Miami can command.
