He is an opposing center back...how much "technical skills" does he need to fill this role? He will do just fine at AC Milan, provided he can get on the field.

The funny thing about this guy's complaint is that it's about a central back, imo, the position that requires the least amount of technical skill, even less than a goalkeeper (whose training requires a surprising amount of ball skills).
Essentially his job should be to make clearances and organize the back line. In terms of technicality, he's actually very good. The glaring example would be his physicality and ability to wall off the opposition from the ball.
His instinct for the ball in the air is remarkable, not just defensively, but we've been him score several times off of set pieces and corners.
Rarely are CBs asked to distribute; this guy's gripe is not only baseless, but reveals a deep ignorance that belies his shiny MVP medal.

if he pulled a few jef agoos moves, then i'd be really mad at him
he needs to play against competition that is mostly air-based, which italy is in large part. he will likely get caught on some great through balls, but oh well that happens to the best in italy
he's flanked by 2 very fast wingbacks and will have top-notch help at his side. he should do fine in italy

look here jack, i was never the state MVP or whatever the hell you are claiming you were, but ive played a hell of a lot of soccer in my time. its always been my understanding that the center backs job was to keep other teams from scoring. and gooch does that pretty damn well.
he is very good at holding the middle of the backline and thats what they are paying him for. if they wanted someone to make perfect crisp passes they would have paid a attacking mid(which they need by the way)

Dude just sounds bitter that he never "made it" in soccer.

exactly
and i mean gooch is no wizard with the ball, but he's not beasley out there who thinks he is one when he's not

the thing that ppl dont realize is that the gooch is way more skilled than they think
Posted on 7/7/09 at 11:31 am to Leauxgan
Yeah, I tried to grant him his central complaint about Gooch: he’s not “technically gifted”. But the real question is “why does that matter?” He does everything you want a center back to do. And he can even add something extra on set pieces on the other end.

My concern is how he will be recieved by Milan? They've been protesting recently so how much will they like this move?

Let's see if Onyweu gets any meaningful playing time before saying this is a great transfer. I think that Serie A suits him better than Spain or the EPL, but Onyewu is not even the most high priority defensive signing for Milan this year.
That would definitely be Thiago Silva. If Nesta is healthy, I don't see Onyewu playing in more than a handful of games next year. However, if Nesta is not able to return to form, this could be a great opportunity for Onyewu. He's the first American (other than Rossi) to play in Serie A since Alexei Lalas.

Not to help lsuin09's point, put I distinctly remember Gooch arse-hatting a clearance in the Italy game that lead to 3rd(?) goal in the Italy game. Tried to come across his body with the right instead of using the left, and whiffed. But I think the entire team was gassed at that point, so it happens.
Even then, if you've been watching him since he came up with the US, you're borderline retarded if you think he hasn't improved leaps and bounds technically in the past 5 years.
He has 100% earned an opportunity with a club like Milan.
Probably moreso than any other US player.

no soccer player in the history of the world hasnt made a mistake...they happen. its all about minimizing those mistakes and he seems to have done that

and he may not get a lot of PT early
This is my worry, happens to so many American players overseas.

I just read lsuin09's posts in this thread..
He doesn't like Onyewu because he potentially may give the ball up in the defensive third one day.

yea....it's retarded....haha
but on a lighter note, who thinks Kenny Cooper sees significant minutes tommorow vs. Honduras after Bob gave him no time in a 4-0 win Saturday?
