I'm pretty sure Tiger isn't even the greatest golfer of all time people. Get a clue.

Babe Ruth
Michael Jordan
Michael Phelps

Those three names have to be on the list. The fourth name is debatable.

I'd like to think more people care about it now than they did before Phelps.

The Olympic Games was waaaayyyy more popular before the 90's for a reason. Start a thread for that though.

Mark Spitz is the standard for swimmers. Phelps went after the standard. Ruth was the standard, so Bonds should get your vote over Ruth per your criteria.

All the Phelps mentions are hilariously terrible.

Spitz won seven gold medals in the 1972 Olympics and Phelps won eight in 2008...seems like he broke the standard. Each of his wins were in World Record fashion and only the 100 Butterfly was close.

He swam the 200 Fly in Sydney at the age of 15...youngest male qualifier in 72 years...um, I would say he more than eclipsed Spitz.

Jim Thorpe:

James Francis "Jim" Thorpe (Sac and Fox (Sauk): Wa-Tho-Huk, translated as "Bright Path";[1] May 28, 1888 – March 28, 1953)[2] was an American athlete of both Native American and European ancestry. Considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports, he won Olympic gold medals for the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon, played American football (collegiate and professional), and also played professional baseball and basketball. He lost his Olympic titles after it was found he was paid for playing two seasons of semi-professional baseball before competing in the Olympics, thus violating the amateurism rules. In 1983, 30 years after his death, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) restored his Olympic medals.
Of Native American and European American ancestry, Thorpe grew up in the Sac and Fox Nation in Oklahoma. He played as part of several All-American Indian teams throughout his career, and "barnstormed" as a professional basketball player with a team composed entirely of American Indians.
He played professional sports until age 41, the end of his sports career coinciding with the start of the Great Depression. Thorpe struggled to earn a living after that, working several odd jobs. Thorpe suffered from alcoholism, and lived his last years in failing health and poverty.
In a poll of sports fans conducted by ABC Sports, Thorpe was voted the Greatest Athlete of the Twentieth Century out of 15 other athletes including Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens, Wayne Gretzky, Jack Nicklaus, and Michael Jordan.[3][4]

Could Secretariat be a candidate for this? He fricking dominated his sport.

I say yes. I think I remember watching a show that listed that horse a top 10 athlete all time.

He didn't just win, he annihilated the competition.

No love for Carl Lewis? Dude got 10 Olympic medals (9 Gold & 1 Silver) in four different Olympics. And that was with a boycott of the 1980 Olympics.

Also, Jim Thorpe is a really good suggestion.
