Alex Smith.... and the "bust" label

Is it removed now after this season?
I would think so. I was so pissed when Harbaugh wanted him back, and I thought I couldn't handle another season of dissapointment.
What do yall expect from Smith next year after he has a full offseason working with Harbaugh?

Shouldn't have been there in the first place. Don't think ANY QB can perform at a high level with that much OC turnover. 7 in 7 years is absurd. Sure, he hasn't been a Pro-Bowler, but he has had a few good seasons. This year he has been exactly what Harbaugh needed him to be.

He's going to have a pretty similar career to Brad Johnson IMO. Smith's numbers are actually really similar to Brad Johnson's stats in the year the Bucs won the Super Bowl
Brad Johnson in 2002 281-451 (62.3%) 3,049 yards, 6.8 YPA, 22 TDs, 6 INTs, 92.9 QB rating
Alex Smith in 2011 273-445 (61.3%) 3144 yards, 7.1 YPA, 17 TDs, 5 INTs, 90.7 QB rating

I think, unless you are really good (or bad), a serviceable QB will eventually become good if given enough time, say 8 years.
Look at Eli as well. Once his brother's shadow was removed, he became elite, after 8 years.

That isn't really a fair comparison. Eli Manning has done more with less than most QBs in the NFL. Look at his receiving corps the last few years. It was pedestrian at best, Plaxico Burress excluded. Hell, in 2007 David Tyree was his receiver that had the famous catch. I don't even think that guy is in the league anymore.

I think it's become such a "win now" league that a lot of young QBs aren't getting the chance to develop and being written off immediately as "not a franchise QB" if they aren't setting the world on fire within their first 3 years.
A guy like Brees was nearly completely written off after his first few years before turning it around.

Also, Aaron Rodgers didn't start until his fourth year in the league.

In a different universe, I would have loved to see what would have happened had Rodgers and Smith swapped draft spots in 2005.

I don't think any QB is considered a bust that plays for several years as a starter. Jamarcus Russell...bust. Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, etc...busts.
Joey Harrington, Alex Smith, David Carr, hell even Brady Quinn I wouldn't necessarily consider busts. Quinn is borderline though. Alex Smith is far from a bust.

No Smith is still a bust....But it is a testament to just how great of a coach that Jim Harbaugh really is that he can fix a bust like Smith...It is very soon, but from a coaching/emotional stand point JH could be one of the best ever. He was able to rebuild the confidence of Smith. Not too many other coaches could do this.

I've wondered this as well especially since it was Mike McCarhty who wanted Smith.

I personally consider Carr and Harrington busts but I see what you're saying as they were put in horrible situations as well and were able to cling on to other teams rosters later.
Smith had the worst rookie season of any QB ever, most likely.

David Carr was a bust. He had no business being a starter in the NFL.

david carr and harrington are definitely busts. If you drafted and paid guys franchise type money and the best that can be said is you hung around for a few years in the NFL, then you were a bust. Harrington couldn't even win a 3rd string job in NOLA. Bust.

David Carr is still in the league though. I think if he had the supporting cast in Houston that Shaub and Yates have this year, he would be considered a top-15 QB at least.

lolwut? Eli has had decent receivers for a while now, including having Jeremy Shockey at TE for the first half of his career. Now, Eli has the best 1-2 punch of receivers in the NFL. The talent around him has never been bad at all.

I highly doubt that. He isn't riding the bench because there's too many good qbs in the league and no one wants to give him a chance

Smith needs good QB coaching. He started to turn it around when Norv Turner was the OC. Harbaugh has done some great things for Alex Smith, but never hesitating to say Alex was his QB was one of the best things Harbaugh could have done.

I don't know how McCarthy got the Packers gig with the Niners having the 32nd ranked offense and Smith looking like such a disaster. He looked far worse than Gabbert. In retrospect it was a great hire but nothing he did that season helped his HC prospects for sure.
If the two switch places, Rodgers is likely never elite, and Smith is about where he finally is now for most of his career. Rodgers is a stud and by far the better but there's no way he'd be at superstar level having gone through what Smith had to put up with. Likewise it wouldn't have taken Smith as long to resemble an NFL QB.
