Hits to the neck and head of a QB are called penalties because they can not defend themselves in that position.
Nobody is disputing that but that isn't what logical people are discussing or upset about. Hits to the chest are legal and, as such, the call was blown.

It was definitely a foul and will be a foul for the rest of eternity. You might as well get used to it. The law suits of the former players has ensured it will never change back to your liking.
It has been illegal for 33 years.
Not sure why the fuss all of a sudden.

I love how the defenders have changed their argument. Go back to Sunday on Saints Talk, originally they all claimed the initial hit was to the neck and that was why it was a penalty. Now that it's been proven otherwise repeatedly they have changed it to "well his arm touched his chin on the way down!"
I hope for nothing more than the Saints getting knocked out of the playoffs on a terrible call like this one and watching the meltdown and hypocrisy rain down upon us all.

People who are OK with the fine, why doesn't ?the NFL fine somebody anytime a face mask or horse collar tackle is made. There needs to be consistency

There is. ANYTHING that can remotely help the NFL image in regards to recent litigation is always trampled with a hobnailed boot......

I also remember there being a ton of threads about how they should show the whole takedown instead of the initial hit. Most knew that the reason for the penalty was for stretching Drew's neck a few inches and busting up his mouth.

This moron and his ilk are responsible for trying to ruin a once great game.
"The simple truth is that football can never be made safe. Even if the essential “kill” mentality were changed, football can never be made safe. And it has never been more dangerous than it is now, thanks to a combination of there being larger, quicker, more lethal people delivering the blows and the lingering mentality brought to the game by coaches and players who cannot or will not change.
Football has an enormous appeal to many people who are borderline psychopaths in a manner that no other sport — and this includes the very virile sport of hockey — does not."
I come to you as an enabler, and I suspect there are many more out there like me. We are essentially troubled by the casual acceptance our society has of a sport that really and truly maims people. That football is America’s current sport of choice reflects poorly on us as a people.

What have you been looking at. The bicep hits his neck on the initial hit and contact to the neck happens the entire way down.
Also, the NFL has already said it doesn't matter where the initial contact happens

Are you really this stupid? Seriously?
It was the continuation of taking Brees down by the neck and then adding some chin action that sealed the deal on the flag being thrown. The initial hit may have drawn a flag, but probably not. It was the rest of the play that guaranteed a flag.
By the rules, the hit to the neck, regardless of intent or where the contact began, is a 15 yard penalty. However, they probably don't call it if Brooks stops trying to remove Brees' head from his body!

Attached, please find two specific rule citations clearly indicating the ilegal nature of that hit.
quote:
Article 8 There shall be no unnecessary roughness. This shall include, but will not be limited to:
(h) any player who grabs a helmet opening of an opponent and forcibly twists, turns, or pulls his head.
_________________________________________
ROUGHING THE PASSER
Article 13 Because the act of passing often puts the quarterback (or any other player attempting a pass) in a position where he is particularly vulnerable to injury, special rules against roughing the passer apply. The Referee has principal responsibility for enforcing these rules. Any physical acts against passers during or just after a pass which, in the Referee’s judgment, are unwarranted by the circumstances of the play will be called as fouls. The Referee will be guided by the following principles:
HITS TO PASSER’S HEAD AND USE OF HELMET AND FACEMASK
(3)?? In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defendersimpermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also the other unnecessary-roughness rules covering these subjects).
I have highlighted 2 rules that indicate that this was absolutely a foul.

In 2011:
Horse Collar Tackle: $15,000 / $30,000
Face Mask: $7,500 / $15,000
It's probably similar to 2013 if not more strict. Players are fined every week. We just never hear about it.

I will never understand why fans get upset over fines.
1. It's not your money.
2. That aspect doesn't affect any game.
3.It's seriously a drop in the bucket for these players.
4. The money to goes to charity, I believe.
There's really no reason to care.

Good call on the penalty.
Bad call on the fine.
Bad call on the fine.

This replay of Brookes hit on Brees last weekend looks much more aggressive in this gif.

Well he didn't grab the helmet opening and twist, turn, or pull or "hit the passer forcibly in the neck area" so I don't see how either of those are relevant.

On Tuesday, NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said the officials in Sunday's game got the call right."You can't make forcible contact to the head or the neck area, even if the contact starts below the neck and rises up,"
I don't know how this can be any clearer.
As far as a fine I don't think it was malicious. But if a guy gets a 20k dollar fine for shoving a player on the sideline, I can easily see how this play got a fine as well.
