I don't think it's the governments business to restrict marriage to heterosexuals OR to require gays to be allowed to be married. If a certain church doesn't want to marry homosexuals, that's perfectly fine. If another church wants to marry gays, have at it. It should be up to the institution.

Link to me saying I was trying to keep gays from marrying.

Calling out those that can't handle opposing opinions doesn't equal trying to prevent gay marriage. Jesus.

Taken as you posted, the current marriage definition would also allow siblings to marry as long as they are of different genders. So, you may want to refine your definition.

Point taken. I should have included a 'not related' note in there.

quote:

Could you define what you mean by consistency? Just as you would not want to read sibling marriages into your definition of marriage, accepting the two people definition does not force someone to accept all types of marriage. There are other important considerations, such as consent or the ability to consent, that would be important to read into that definition

I agree with you on consent. My point is that the current definition of marriage is based off the belief that the institution should consist of a non related man and woman (due to religious reasons, procreation reasons, etc). The supporters of gay marriage seem to believe that this definition is inadequate due to the non-participation of gays, so they are proposing that the definition be changed to allow any 2 people who love each other to enter into marriage together. The argument is that their belief system (based on love, their own morality, etc.) is equivalent (or superior) to the established belief system that created the definition because they do not agree with the established beliefs.

It seems to me that another group (polygamists for example) could make the same argument against the idea that marriage should be limited to 2 people who aren't related. To be consistent the supporters of gay marriage must allow these changes also because their initial argument was based off the idea that the definition of marriage must be changed to accept a different belief system (their own).

Nah, the Pope said that everyone is saved, even atheists. So he'll be good along with all of the gays. Deal with it.

so gays getting married is the spirit of what Jesus preached?

You are trying to make it sound as though people are stoning homosexuals or something. You want this to be a bigger deal than what it is which is why this thread was started.

Agreed, they want their beliefs respected but do not respect the opinions and beliefs of others. I could give 2 fricks if gay people get married, it is those who support gay marriage and bash those that don't that piss me off
