I don't want him banned for life. However, he's pretty old as far as Major Leaguers go, so I'm not sure how much he'll have left after he serves his lengthy suspension.

If he gets the Braun deal, the Yanks still owe him $86 million after 2013.

I still don't get the "saddled" with contract thing, there is no salary cap in baseball and Yankees can afford his salary. If he plays again and Yankees have to pay it doesn't hurt the franchise or the team. Sure they would like to not pay, but they ain't hurting in the wallet

I find myself in the position of enjoying either outcome

If the Yankees were stuck paying the rest of his ridiculous contract I'd laugh at the dumb arse Yankees for their stupidity.

If A-Rod ended up banned and unable to collect the rest of his contract I'd shed no tears for him. By all appearances he's used most if not all of his career and yet claimed the opposite.

whoa whoa whoa, this can't be right....that's like half the entire contract and if he played one game then got suspended the way i understand it, they would only owe him for one game.

I dont know the specifics but even if they had to pay his whole years salary i belief it would be only (relatively) 20-30 Million

ETA: nvm read about it in the other thread that is one crazy arse loophole

Huh?

You don't think it hurts the franchise to not have an extra $30mil/year to spend on other players?

the yankees today are more salary conscience than they were before george gave up control, correct? You may be right, having several million tied up for the near future may not have any affect on future contract decisions and/or FA signings.

It basically comes down to this years pay. He'll be suspended but the Yankees want that to happen before they have to pay him. I'm guessing the Yankees have been in close contact with the Players Union over this issue. Based on what happened with Braun I'm guessing the Players Union is going to hang A-Rod out to dry, as they should.

It's been reported they have more evidence than the Braun case so why would the Union fight for A-Rod to get this years pay and then watch him get suspended?

Before they pay him what? They are paying him for this year's salary.

Maybe you guys are correct, but i just don't see how whether he plays or not has anything to do with these issues.

The Yanks not wanting him to play, I'm under the impression that's just because they don't want all the baggage he's bringing along anywhere near the team.

The Yankees still owe Rodriguez upwards of $100 million on an albatross of a contract the team signed a few years ago. If Rodriguez received a lifetime ban, the Yankees are off the hook for the contract. If Rodriguez retired due to injury, insurance would cover most of the remaining money on the contract.

The yankees are trying to get him to retire or be banned for life so they don't have to pay him.

But how does playing in 1 game or not change any of this?

If he retires or is suspended, it's not gonna be retroactive, it's gonna be from the date it happens.

Admittedly I didn't read the article as I'm about to leave work.
