ORLANDO, Fla. - A new report said more than 80,000 square feet of the University of Central Florida’s Spectrum Stadium had some sort of corrosion, and some of those areas presented immediate safety concerns.

University officials said the stadium is safe and the report stated that repairs were completed before football season. There's still more work to be done long term and it could cost the university millions of dollars.

The report found more than 1,600 "hot spots," some prompting emergency repairs in August. Long term stadium repairs will likely span over four years and could cost more than $14 million

If your team's stadium has a lot of erector set, this is something to be aware of. It's why erector set is never the first option. You spend far more time, effort, and money maintaining exposed steel than you do for steel-reinforced concrete.

Not to mention, steel-reinforced concrete is much safer.

With their attendance, there should be no worries.

So, in ten years they hadn't done any inspection? That's a lot of corrosion.

Good question. Erector set requires near constant attention...dunno what UCF did or didn't do during those ten years.

The big problem is with the bolts. If the bolts rust through, they are a real pain to get out.

So glad we LSU fans don't have to worry about issues like these.

Went to the very first game there against Tennessee. The stands in the student section bounce up and down, A LOT.

Should have used galvanized steel.

They are in a high salt environment. That's not surprising. They make some outstanding spray epoxys for encasing steel structures like that.

shite ain't cheap though and is a bitch to spray.

Probably cheaper than spending $14 million for emergency repairs.

The LSU Soccer Stadium is largly erector set and it was done right...

LSU Soccer Complex

I guess this is why UCF is suing it's contractors and architect. You expect a certain standard of construction when you build an athletic facility, and UCF clearly did not get what it paid $55 million for.

LSU Soccer Stadium looks as good as when it was remodled in 2010...the same year UCF's stadium was built.

Assuming those are the worst pictures, the stadium is in no threat of falling or even warranting immediate action. All they need to do is blast and paint.

They should have been doing that on an ongoing basis.

But it's probably a little more serious than that if the repairs are going to cost $14 million.

They also said the repairs will span four years. I dunno if that is to spread out the money being spent, but it sounds more like some of the repairs will be difficult ones.

Like replacing rusted through bolts.

But if that's not done right, it gets trickier to fix. Ask the folks who built the $60M high school stadium in Allen, Texas; it took them over a year to fix the mess AND the team had to play an entire football schedule on the road.

replacing rusted through bolts is a lot easier than replacing intact bolts. None of those pictures show rusted through bolts though.

Its going to be expensive to paint all that steel it will probably take awhile too if you do it around football season. 4yrs 14 mill sounds about right.

you don't continuously blast and paint steel.
