Apparently he was also a fantastic businessman/investor.

We have zero evidence to suggest that Cobb was a racist.

He was a Southerner, born in Georgia in 1886, and it has become easy to equate that upbringing to a racist bent. But Cobb's great-grandfather preached against slavery. His father was an advocate for the public education of black Americans. And Cobb himself was a vocal supporter of integration in baseball when asked about Jackie Robinson in 1952.

"The Negro should be accepted wholeheartedly, and not grudgingly," he said. "The Negro has the right to play professional baseball and whose [sic] to say he has not?"

Ty Cobb was also an incredible businessman (uneducated farm boy), in 1907 he invested in a small Georgia company. By the time of his death his investment in Coca-Cola grew to 24,000 shares, he served on the board of directors and spokesman, and owned three Coca-Cola bottling plants, located in Idaho, Oregon and California.

In 1924, Ty was paid $25,000 to appear in a newspaper advertisement for Detroit's United Motors. Instead of pocketing the money, he used every dollar to purchase United Motors stock. United Motors was eventually bought by General Motors and Ty's shares were converted to GM shares. Cobb continued to reinvest the dividends into additional shares, at the time of his death Cobb owned $10 million worth of GM stock.

Was this the 71 game that was on last night? I watched half of it and it was incredible to see the all time greats all on the same field- Aaron, Mays, Stargell, Clemente, Bench, Yaz, brooks and Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson, etc. just about every player was a top tier hall of famer.

I’m gonna look for more of these old all star games.

If I'm not mistaken Fosse and his wife stayed with the Pete and his wife's home in Cincinnati that weekend.

Gotta agree. Blocking the plate was always bushleague.

Catcher is supposed to be in front of the plate and then a swipe tag...the plate should be attainable for the baserunner without having to plow through him.

I don't know why people blame Pete Rose...
Roy Fosse was fricking 4 feet up the 3rd base line blocking the path to the plate. What was Rose supposed to do, run around him and be called out?

If you want to debate catchers blocking the path that's a understandable argument to have. Rose gunning it as fast as he can and throwing all of his body weight into the catcher during a fricking All-Star game and then standing over him was uncalled for.

And Rose dipped to start a head-first slide and saw that wasn't an option.

After further educating myself it seems that Ty Cobb may, in fact, not have been a racist after all. There are even some stories that suggest he possibly was even slightly ahead of his time when it comes to race relations.

There is, however, a lot of anecdotal evidence that he was, in fact, an a-hole

89 was on earlier.

I watched some of that 71 game last night also.

Had no idea who Frank Howard was until last night. He was enormous. 6’7 255.

Closest current player baseball similarity score on Bref is Nelson Cruz

It’s been pretty well established that Ty Cobb was an all around horrible person, racist, cruel, sexist, hated by his teammates and family. His only redeeming quality was his baseball ability

Don’t let BLM see this, they’ll probably try to cancel him out of the Hall of Fame.

Exactly. Rose even said he was about to slide and saw there was no place to slide because Fosse was so far up the line.

He wasn’t taunting him. He was checking to see if he was OK. They were good friends and the families spent that weekend together

Read the book Cobb...he was a despicable human being in every way. Died alone, his family had disowned him, his kids would not speak to him. Horrible man.
