Mancini vs. Arguello was epic. Arguello was bad arse and met his match in Pryor...twice

Wasn’t that fight on CBS or some network tv live?

Yep. Effectively ended 15 round title fights.

I remember watching that live as a kid, not knowing shite about boxing, but wondering how the hell could he stay on his feet, and what’s wrong with this referee.

I was in Vegas in October of 82. I was TDY at Nellis AFB for a few weeks and was doing touristy stuff on the strip. Taking pictures and trying to figure out which girls were students and which were prostitutes and I got a picture of the marquee advertising this fight.

I watched it live. The most brutal fight I’ve watched and I watched Alexis Arguello bleed all over the ring many times. Kim somehow refused to go down and the ref refused to stop the fight. Sad ending.

I remember watching that fight on TV and wondering who was going to KO who, it was that back and forth of a fight.

Unfortunately for Kim, it was one fight too many. He died and not long after that, his mother committed suicide and so did the referee, Richard Green several months after that fight.

That fight was the catalyst for getting fight changed from 15 round to 12 rounds for championship bouts.

I was young, maybe 7 or 8 at the time. My Great-Grandmother, who babysat for my younger brothers had recently passed away, she had her own room.
The following Saturday I went into her room and watched that Boom Boom fight, and then watched Miss. State upset LSU.

Got punished for something.

So the following Saturday, I had to sneak into that room. Put the TV on and I saw "The Play-Band on the field" Stanford/Cal. Got so excited busted myself.

Wide World of Sports was on ABC. I believe It was CBS Sports Spectacular that televised the fight. I am 60 years old. I remember when we used to only get one NCAA football game a week, with an occasional doubleheader, televised.

I watched that fight at my late Granddad's home.He was a huge boxing fan. With Kim dying because of the fight, his Mom committing suicide afterwards along with the referee what a 30 for 30 this would be.Call it '15 Rounds'.It changed boxing as we know it now.
