Spahn also had two no-hitters, won the 1957 Cy Young Award, and went 23-7 at the age of 42.

Spahn broke in the majors in '42, didn't win his first game until '46, but did win a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge.

quote:

Braves manager Casey Stengel, who sent him to the minors after Spahn refused to throw at Brooklyn Dodger batter Pee Wee Reese in an exhibition game. Stengel later said that it was the worst managing mistake he had ever made: I said "no guts" to a kid who went on to become a war hero and one of the greatest lefthanded pitchers you ever saw. You can't say I don't miss 'em when I miss 'em. The 1942 Braves finished next to last, and Stengel was fired the following year.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA what the frick!?

Have you ever seen his statistics? He didn't have a winning season til they moved to Dodger Stadium and only had like five decent seasons

Ok yes I exaggerated but the dude only had 165 career wins...he should not be considered one of the best pitchers of all time based on his last five or six seasons after being so mediocre before

wins is about the last stat i'd look at for starters and he did retire early, but if Koufax pitched in the 90's he'd be accused of using PED's the way his career stats changed so dramatically. His peak was absolutely dominating. For a long time it was the best peak ever, but Pedro has a run that's even better.

It is crazy looking at some of these old guys' stats. For his career, Cy Young had 3.43 K/9 and .17 HR/9. Just a totally different game today.

Bob Gibson is the baddest motherfricker to ever toe the rubber. That guy wasn't afraid of anything. He imposed his will on the entire game.

They lowered the mound because of him. That pretty much says all I need to know about who is the greatest.

They lowered the mound IN PART because of him but also in large part because of Denny McClain. Don Drysdale, Luis Tiant, Mickey Lolich (also of the World Series winning Tigers), and Catfish Hunter all also had stellar years. The year of the pitcher was 1968. Denny McClain won 31 games for the Detroit Tigers that year. Carl Yaztremski won the batting title with a .301 BA which was the lowest ever not in the dead ball era.

The question is have YOU ever seen his statistics? Those "decent seasons" are some of the best of any pitcher ever. He won 3 pitching triple crowns over a 4 year period. Only Walter Johnson, Alexander, and Koufax have done it 3 times. he didnt have the longevity of some, but there's no doubt about how great he was in his prime.

Also he has the most 1 hitters with 12 (tied with Feller) and 18 2-hitters. Pretty impressive.

Ryan wasn't the greatest pitcher ever, not even close. But I was at that game in Oakland. Had season tickets in Row 6 behind home plate. The line up for the A's was really strange. Canseco, McGwire, Lansford and Steinbach either did not play or did not start. Not that it would have mattered since Ryan was in complete control all game.
