I'm thinking the super tight supply of engines might have to do with the recent conversion to the hybrid PU. So yeah it's about money, and the stupid thing is that the engine manufacturers wanted this, but then they are too cheap to prepare enough engines to supply the Indy 500.

Right after Fast Friday they do the qualifying draw to set the order of qualifying, and it's streamed live on YouTube. Typically you want a low number (to go early) because the air and the track heat up, which means less air density (less downforce) and less grip on the track surface later in the morning and into the afternoon. But with the dodgy weather forecast for tomorrow it's a crapshoot.

Some drivers draw their number themselves, but many have family members draw the number for them while the host interviews the driver. Takuma Sato didn't even show up, he sent one of his mechanics to do his draw. She drew a high number for Sato and heard some boos so she looked a little embarrassed. She was a cute blond, she wasn't wearing any makeup but she looked like she would clean up really nicely. Of course I googled her and she has Instagram and Tiktok and likes taking pics/videos of herself. And yeah she cleans up nicely.

The gearbox mechanic on RLL's #75 entry (Sato):

The order of the Saturday morning first qualifying run:

Because of the compressed schedule, drivers get just one attempt to make the Fast 12 shootout. That's even more pressure than usual.

I think odds are, some favorite with a fast car is going to have an issue during his run, or has to qualify very late under much hotter conditions (e.g., Palou), and end up far down the order and will have a lot more work getting back to the front during the race.

My take is if you have a fast car you will make your way to front in the race. The challenge to that is getting caught up other drivers messes. And if you gamble on pit strategy and it backfires.

With the flqg issue that happened in last race Indy says they will throw caution flags with no concern about pit cycles. That will make strategy interesting.

The Fast 12 chart. Positions 7-12 are now set.

The top 6 cars will run for pole starting at 5:00 pm CT on Fox.

Alex Rossi and Lil Dave fill out the front row.

Yup, Palou just has this car dialed in compared to other drivers. Knows how to push it that extra bit yet not over the line.

Well there were some late-night shenanigans.

Rookie #4 Caio Collet (AJ Foyt), who originally qualified P10, and #24 Jack Harvey (Dreyer & Reinbold), who originally qualified P29, were both DQ'd from the qualifying session after post-qualy inspection because of the same violation. Their cars both had modifications to a Dallara-supplied part that was supposed to be installed as-is with the supplied hardware.

This was a particularly big blow to rookie Collet, who was originally starting on the inside of Row 4. Both drivers are now starting the race on the last row.

The teams have the right to appeal the ruling, and we have a whole week til the race, so the revised grid is still considered provisional.

Ferrucci is very good at Indy. He’s never started this high before. He will be fun to watch Sunday.

I’m an Andretti fan, but I love his car. Great cause

After a full week of practice and qualifying with zero* incidents, they finally had a big crash in Monday morning practice.

Front row starter Alex Rossi lost in in T2. Pato and Grosjean got caught up in it.

*Well technically, Sato kissed the wall with his right rear tire on his last qualifying run, but he does that all the time so it doesn't count. After qualy, when VeeKay was asked about how he felt about his qualy runs, he said could have gone flat-out and "pulled a Sato," but he said Indy 500 car setup is so sensitive, any minor contact and the car won't be the same after that, so he chose to put it safely in the show.

FYI, this week's Indy 500 schedule:

Monday

Practice 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm ET

After the crash, apparently the rest of practice was cancelled due to weather. From the video, they only got 30 minutes of practice in before the crash.

Tuesday through Thursday

The drivers fly around the country doing promotion. They'll do morning shows, late shows, public appearances.

Friday is Carb Day

Practice 11:00 am - 1:00 pm ET

After practice is the Oscar Meyer Wienie 500, and the pit stop competition.

Sunday

Pre-race 10:00 am ET

Green flag: 12:45 pm ET
