My understanding is that the Indy 500 is not locked down. My impression is that aside from sponsorship issues, the other limiting factor is that the engine manufacturers don't want to supply more engines. That's one reason why they've been trying to get another engine supplier for a long time now. Having just two suppliers is a burden at the Indy 500.

Makes sense, thanks for the info. My guess is if a high dollar sponsor wanted another car Indy (TV) would help negotiate it since TV makes more money on bump day than no bump day. And they’d find the equipment. I really enjoy bump day and the pressure of putting 4 laps together ti get in the race or not.
