My understanding is that the Indy 500 is not locked down. My impression is that aside from sponsorship issues, the other limiting factor is that the engine manufacturers don't want to supply more engines. That's one reason why they've been trying to get another engine supplier for a long time now. Having just two suppliers is a burden at the Indy 500.

Makes sense, thanks for the info. My guess is if a high dollar sponsor wanted another car Indy (TV) would help negotiate it since TV makes more money on bump day than no bump day. And they’d find the equipment. I really enjoy bump day and the pressure of putting 4 laps together ti get in the race or not.

As a result of Rossi’s Hybrid Failure and lack of FCY + comments to Fox, IndyCar has announced the following:
Effective immediately, INDYCAR Race Control will no longer consider pit windows or the running order of cars on track before issuing a full course caution when necessary.

The new qualy adjustment is SO LAME. 
It doesn't make up for the lack of bump qualifying, which has far more dramatic consequences.

Wow, thats low.
It might be time to move it elsewhere. Would love to see a Indy/Nascar double at WGI or somewhere else.
I think what happens is Indy overkill all in the same month. It was a good race too so its not a knock on my part. But maybe have it a different time of year.

Yes, its not the race its the timing. Same partial track as Indy500 and its too much at one place. A different venue likely does better. I think people are wanting to the 500 and its a different style of racing so casual fans tune out

So, yesterday and today they mentioned that Castroneves and Sato have to limit their practice miles because they only have one engine each. Presumably all of the one-off drivers are in this predicament. The full-time drivers are expected to swap for fresh engines before qualy or before the race, can't remember what they said.
I don't remember them being this tight on engines before that multi-time Indy 500 winners can't get a spare engine. Or at least I don't remember one-off former winners like Castroneves and Sato being limited on practice laps the last few years. Ryan Hunter-Reay is the only other one-off former winner. I haven't heard too much about him during practice.

They did early race running in traffic, but later in the day many drivers did four-lap qualy sims in preparation for Fast Friday, where the they will get qualy boost and everyone will be doing qualy sims and looking to go over 230 mph.
The usual suspects were at the top of the no-tow chart, with a few smaller-team guys sprinkled in there: Sato for RLL, Penske, Penske, Ganassi, Rinus VeeKay for Juncos Hollinger, Penske, Andretti, McLaren, Conor Daly for Dreyer & Reinbold, Andretti, Santino Ferrucci for AJ Foyt, Ganassi, Ganassi, McLaren.
Helio Castroneves is going for win #5, but his Meyer Shank team is looking very mediocre so far. All three MSR cars are in the lower third of the no-tow chart.

Thats crazy not having enough extra engines. Biggest race of year and have to manage engines to so close.

UPDATE: The start of Fast Friday practice for the Indy 500 is currently on hold due to inclement weather conditions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
