I always get in to the history of the 500 during the month of May.
I remember the 1973 500 very vaguely as I was 5. I don't remember the race much per se, only snippets in my mind of my dad, grandfather, and uncles conversations of the Swede Savage crash. I think it's my earliest memory.
I also remember seeing the Salt Walther crash. I still have a fear of fire from that.

They had more than 50 cars for 33 spots back then

Good morning 
Just checked the weather Indy. Rain chances begin to pick up at 3pm. My dad and I were there in 2024 when it was delayed 2-3 hours due to rain. I remember obsessing over the weather that week. There was no doubt there was going to be rain. Thankfully, they were able to get it in that afternoon and it turned out to be an incredible finish.

-How many days did you go? Assuming Friday through Monday are a must should I look at Monday or Tuesday as a travel day to get back home?
-Where should i get a hotel? Any recommendations reasonably priced. I don't mind needing to drive an hour (whatever that means on race day)
I'm either doing Indy or 24 Hours of Daytona in 2027. Both are bucket list racing events for me.

I’d go Thursday through Monday and travel back on Tuesday. I like to stay downtown but probably get better prices on north or west side burbs, and it’s a little easier making your way into track. Make sure to take the time to visit IMS Museum while you’re there, it is unbelievable.

Watching the pre-race show. Mostly not that interesting.
But it's insane that they had 68 straight years
of a Foyt, Unser, or Andretti in the race (1958 to 2025). With Marco no longer racing the 500, that streak is over this year.

BTW, the IMS Pagoda is so iconic. There is no other racetrack that I know of that has such a stylish and recognizable control tower.
I found this page that has the history of the IMS control tower. The first pagoda-style building went up in 1913. Tony Hulman may have saved the track, but he built a non-descript control tower to replace the stylish pagoda. His grandson Tony George, who I hate for breaking up IndyCar in the infamous 1996 split, at least made the smart decision to go back to a pagoda-style control tower, and here we are.
