I look at Max and I think, "This is the only guy currently racing who is capable of achieving a triple crown," and I so desperately want to see someone do it. If that interests him, he's going to have to give up F1 fairly soon.
I know he's said ovals aren't his thing, but if wins at Le Mans in the next 5-7 years, I bet you see his tone change real quick
That brings up another point regarding the triple crown. If he races and wins at Le mans in a GT, are we going to count it towards a triple crown? There's no strict definition of it, but I willing to count it with an asterisks.

I think fans care more about the triple crown more than anyone else.
Alonso may try it again if he gets booted from F1. JPM probably still has the easiest path.

Is he considered an all time great? I know the European fans love him.

He is Max if Max never wins another title, and is just an above mid-field challenger (adjusted this definiton)
We are saying that is where Max is in his career.
Alonso in 2013 was a killer and would be argued up there with some of the greatest of all time. Would certainly be above Hamilton then.

It isn't a bad reflection on Max just saying he has a lot of work to do if he will be considered an all-time top F1 driver.
To each their own, but I think accomplishments in multiple disciplines is a better measure of greatness than X amount of wins or championships in only one form of motorsport, especially given how car dependent F1 is. I feel like that's what Max is after. Does 5 instead of 4, or 80 instead of 70 really change how great he is?
Put another way, I think Mario Andretti has a cooler resume than Lewis, but that's just me. I'm looking forward to see how far Max is willing to branch out and what types of cars he's willing to try out. I think it's fun.

I hear you. We are talking a single series though.
Rossi has 9 Moto GP title but that doesn't put him in the converstation for greatest F1 driver.
Kimi, Alonso, Kubica, Montoya also have incredible resumes.

Ok, question since raw talent and capabilities don't factor into your top F1 drivers of all time, its championships... at least that is how I'm reading your responses.
Where does Senna rank for you? Yes, died at 34, but he only had 3 championships, his last being in 91' and he died in 94'
I don't know a single non-DTS F1 fan that doesn't consider him a Top 3 and worst case Top 5 driver of all time. What he did in the wet was absolutely incredible and his raw skill and how he drove the car was second to none.

I don't think championships are the only factor. Longevity, career without a dominate car, head to head on teammate, competition faced.....
Not sure where I rank their performance outside of the series in ranking their performance in F1.
Kurt Cobain. Great. Never had a chance to turn into Billy Corgan.

Well the chance outside of his death was very short. He was 34 and hadn't won a championship in 3yrs. He maybe gets 1 or 2 more before he's creeping on 40 and out of the game.
So where does he rank? Top 5, Top 10, Top 20?

I think could be top 5. But I think the top 10-15 are pretty interchangeable.
His legacy of who he raced against certainly helps. Having a memorable legacy helps. Not ruining your legacy helps.
It is all public perception though.

Sounds good, was just curious.
I think he and Max are equal on a raw talent aspect and what they can do in a car is second to none.

Last year was the same car that dominated for years. They didn't fall off that much. His effort was pretty amazing but the car was far from a shitbox.
His car wasn’t on par with Mercedes or McClaren yet he almost won the title

So what is his problem this year then? The car last year was not as good as Mclaren in most races and the results showed that. It was certainly on par in a lot of races.

His car isn’t as good as the other top 4 cars. Miami did show improvement. Give Max a car even close to the others and he wins. Give him a car that’s dominant and you get 23 results
It’s pretty clear he can drive any type of car. I would love to see him try the Indy 500, but that’s a pipe dream
I’m hoping that both Max and Lewis come back next year so I can see them drive in person

I believe Max is just using his influence to get the cars where there should be. I don't believe he is going to leave F1. He is putting pressure on FiA, Redbull and every other team. I think he will have another world championship or 2 before he retires.
Redbull will have the car sooner than later for him to be happy again. Redbull does offer him so much outside of F1 and last weekend was an example of that. Ford wants him in LeMans, Mercedes and Redbull want to keep him in GT. All of these are much easier if he is a Redbull driver, but not impossible.
I feel Lewis is gone. He has accomplished enough and unless things turn around soon for him, he will just call it quits and go do something else.

Again, he is the only driver that has come out and says he enjoys driving this style of car. He's been consistently 5-6 range, which I think it ultimately going to be all we can expect out of him at this point.
I don't see him walking away from the $ with Ferrari just yet, but there were rumors of him announcing his retirement at Silverstone this year, so who knows.
Posted on 5/19/26 at 3:03 pm to Lsut81
His contract states that he is the only one that can exercise the 3rd year option. Ferrari has made it ever clear they are ready for Bearman to be in the prancing horse. I think the rumors are true that he will announce something at home when they are at Silverstone but who knows what it is.
I feel like Ferrari would make him a very nice financial offer to not option the 3rd year. He should take it if the offer and go out when he is still semi competitive.
I like Hamilton so I dont want to see him become mid pack.

Lewis will retire and get paid big money to sell Ferraris and participate in track days.
