If tweet fails to load, click here. Some background to what LaJoie is talking about:
quote:
New this year is NASCAR's Open Exemption Provisional, which guarantees a spot “for world-class drivers who enter a NASCAR Cup Series race.” Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves qualifies as he attempts his first DAYTONA 500 at age 49 this year. If Castroneves gets in via qualifying time or Duel races, the field will be locked at 40. If not, he will still make the field as the 41st car.

And they don't want Mike Wallace at all.

Yeah, it’s weird that they are guaranteeing a position for Helio in the Daytona 500 when he has no NASCAR experience, but they’ve deemed Mike Wallace essentially unqualified.
I get that Helio brings more attention than Mike Wallace, but it is weird from a competition fairness perspective.

Why doesn't Penske prepare a car for Helio? They have a history.

Toyotas were at the top of the board for the first Daytona 500 practice:

Qualifying tonight for the 500. Two of the open drivers will advance to the 500 based on speeds.
I’m going with Allgaier and Chandler Smith to qualify in on speed.

Practice speeds mean nothing. Some sniff dirty air and others run more laps.
Due to inspection after practice and before qualifying - and how close teams set tolerances to qualify well - if they run too many laps - and because Daytona is so bumpy - it can shake cars out of tolerance if you run too many. Most just go out to make sure nothing is loose and thats it.
Hendrick always does well in qualifying here. But starting last year I think they started changing strategy to set car up for the race moreso than qualifying. Not much, they will still qualify well but it seems they might back off the qualifying speeds to get more racing/pack speed/handling. We’ll know tonight

I hope Allgaier and Truex get in.

Qualifying starting on FS2 until the basketball game on FS1 ends.

Truex’s scheme is sharp!

This is woefully slow. They need about 10 more mph at Daytona/Talledega.
Qually needs to be 190 race pace for leader at or about 200. Cut a bit of downforce, it would spread the pack a bit.

Truex locked in. Glad to see it.
