Championship information
In the Drivers' Championship, lots of changes after the Monaco Grand Prix:
Perez dropped two to P5
Lando moved up one to P3
Sainz moved up one to P4
Albon moved up two to P15
Ocon dropped one to P16
Magnussen dropped one to P17
Gasly moved up one to P18
Zhou dropped one to P19
In the Constructors' Championship, Williams moved up one to P8, and Alpine moved down one to P9.
In the prediction rankings, a big shake-up in the order! I think I mentioned after the Monaco Grand Prix that Perez dropped two places in the WDC order, and that people who predicted Perez finishing low in the order would start rising. Well that's exactly what happened.
After dominating the charts for seven straight races to start the 2024 season, MikeD has finally been toppled! He drops down from P1 to P4. sorantable is the new leader, rising one spot. VABuckeye shot up from P7 to P2. Pitt Road rocketed up from P12 to P3.
Others have shot up or down many positions from last week, so check out your current position, then click on Event 7 to see where you were last week.
Note that the Average entry has the 3rd highest score! As a reminder, the Average entry was something I put together by taking the average ranking of each driver from all of our predictions. The Average entry is basically our collective wisdom. So for Average to be the 3rd highest score, it means as a group, we are pretty good at predicting things.

What a day for McLaren yesterday, finished 2nd at Monaco, 2nd at the Indy 500, and 2nd in the Formula-E race.

I’ve always loved F1 and I am happy to see the new fans.
I but I’ve long worried that people who start watching F1 would start with Monaco since it is the most well known race. I worried because the race is the most boring on the calendar. Having the most well know race be your most boring race is a problem that F1 has ignored for way too long, that’s on their management. The cars must be able to follow each other without losing too much downforce and the cars MUST be smaller to make Monaco exciting. F1 decided batteries were more important than smaller cars, I think that’s a bad idea. They should be pushing to include what you can in a smaller footprint regulation.

yup- every fan post 2020 is a fan of a reality show and not a real fan of motorsport
I have to say I am a post 2020 fan. I was never a fan of motor sports because my dad and friends were not into it.
I watched the first few seasons of DTS and came to the realization that the personalities and business side of the sport were AMAZING.
DTS pulled me in but I dove in myself beyond the superficial.
My son and I now talk about Audi, drivers change, engine manufacturers, ect ect...
So to your comment about after 2000 not a fan of motorsport, I have to disagree.. DTS brought me in but the sport kept me.
BTW this happens every year I have learned after Monaco......the haters hate and long time enthusiasts beat their chest.

Canada next whcih is NOT a boring race and is on a wonderful track.
Posted on 5/27/24 at 11:57 am to VABuckeye
Seems to be some rumors floating that Ocon will be dropped for the Canada GP.

I just watched the replay on ESPN2. Boring. There was zero passing or lead changes. Just cars following each other around the track. Boring.

How does a sport that often has zero competitive intrigue have such a massive following?
I don't know about zero competitive intrigue but F1 is about the cars. People like seeing the most technologically advanced cars in the world racing. The track records at COTA (the only track F1, NASCAR and IndyCar all race at) show that F1 cars are moving at speeds that are hard to comprehend.
F1 - Leclerc 1:36.169
IndyCar - Herta 1:48.895
NASCAR - Bell 2:11.549
If you want an equal race you just crate a spec series like IndyCar or a pseudo spec series like NASCAR. But some sports aren't equal and nobody really complains. Fair but unequal. Having Tom Brady or Mahomes is fair but creates an unequal NFL. Nick Saban made college football unequal for 15 years. Djokovic, Nadal and Federer combined to win 66 grand slams in 20 years.
There are plenty of things to complain about in the other series but they do put on a better show most weeks. But in order to do that they often have some Mickey Mouse rules in order to create a better show. In F1 the fastest car usually wins and the most deserving driver usually wins. That's a much more satisfying result to me than late cautions to bring the field back together or drivers showing zero racecraft by running over each other.
Also having this conversation after Monaco is always unfair to F1. It's always the worst race of the year. It's also probably the best qualifying in all of racing though. The risks taken during Q3 are amazing to watch.

Saw that. Possibly Doohan in the car.
Frankly, wouldn't mind seeing KMag catch a one race ban to see how Bearman does in a Haas.

indycars arent spec and those COTA track times are from when they were running a low downforce spec
If they ran the manufacturers aerokits (honda and chevy) at COTA the top Indycar times would be comparable to the rear of the F1 field
when f1 adopts their next set of regs Indycar should be as fast if not faster
I watch racing for the driving and heroism and Indycar is the pinnacle of motorsport in that regard

They may not be spec, but every chassis at Indy was a Dallera

For actual racing monaco sucks. The cars are so big now that passing is just unsafe on pretty much all of the track.

For a long time, the Monaco field was limited to 16 cars

Does each team manufacture their own chassis? Or are they purchased from Dallara?

Why didn't one of the teams try a high downforce setup? Is it because it's a spec series and each team is required to run the same aero?

Unlikely

Yes, too big and too fast for this circuit. Since they will never redo the car size just to make this course work, they need to do something radical.
Need to restrict engine power to about 60%. And create a push to pass option. Thats about all they can do. Since they go so fast the few passing areas are covered so quickly due to speeds. If cut 40% of power and give a PTP, there would more passing.
I know it will never happen. But in Nascar their SS speeds were so high they created the plate. And now those are their most watched races. Bit different type track but they must do something for safety. Its crazy how many close calls F1 has on this track and just get lucky no one is hurt of killed. If they wait too late they’ll lose fans when it happens.

The drivers comments after the race are brutal.
Verstappen
Russell's crew or him
Albon
Verstappen
quote:
"F--- me, this is so boring," he said in a radio message to the Red Bull pit wall in the opening stage of the race. "I should have brought my pillow!"
Russell's crew or him
quote:
"At this stage, we gain nothing from driving fast,"
Albon
quote:
"It's annoying because he had pace, he had so much pace," Albon said about Tsunoda after the race. "I was like, we can all manage, I'm happy to manage. We don't need to manage this much. We were managing so much. I was like, 'Man, I could get out and drive my Vespa around here.'
quote:
"I mean, it was so slow. It was so painful. It's actually hard to stay focused when you're driving that slowly because you're just not even near anything. You're not near any limit. He absolutely cleared off at the end of the race, and I was like, 'You could have done this the whole time!'"
quote:
Verstappen: I think George and I are going to go for a run now, because we didn't really have any exercise. My God! That was terrible. So boring! Yeah, anyway.
Russell: At least a bit more interesting at the end. I was scared we were going to lose the tyres by driving so slow.
Verstappen: It's OK. You can't pass, so ...
Russell: We need to do something. They need to change something for Sunday. Mandatory pit stops, I don't know.
Verstappen: Like five or something!
Russell: Yeah, five!
quote:
Verstappen: Mandatory nap! I don't know.
Russell: One lap on foot!
Interviewer: Toilet break?

Sure, you can pass. But it's not worth the risk for over 95% of the race so at that point it's not even racing. Monaco is cool for children, women, and new fans
