Love the majors but don't follow tennis otherwise really, what is the significance of "points to defend"?

Ranking is based on points gained through wins. The points accumulated are dropped from the total 52 weeks after you earn them. If someone gained X amount of points in the last australian open, they have to "defend" X amount of points this australian open (ie, earn them again this year) to prevent losing them and dropping their total points and possibly their rank.

He was ranked super low last year out of nowhere got to the quarterfinals. He then proceeded to have a pretty meh year until the US Open where he reached the semis. He then won a tournament and found some success post US Open. But he basically won very few matches during clay and grass season and if he loses early here he will drop probably out of the top 50 I’d expect (currently he’s ranked 15).

He would barely drop at all. Fewest points he can leave with is 1875.

The tournament is underway. It looks like ESPN2 may pick up coverage at midnight. I think Tennis Channel has replays during the day.

I’m not home at the moment, but Tennis Channel used to have it live starting at 6:00 CT before moving to espn around 10/11pm.
I’m not sure if they’re doing that this year

Men’s Tennis must be in its most boring era right now. Novak will mostly likely beat somebody in the final 3-0 who most people have never heard of.

You heard it here first zzzzz

Did ESPN send their commentators down there this year or are they all back in the US commenting from the studio again?

Let's go! JJ about to get started for the Americans. All matches streamed on ESPN+.

Eta- SofaScore is a great app for following tennis and to track your favorite players.

Woof (pun intended), not a great start for Americans. Wolf retires down a set. Fritz struggling in the 5th set vs a South American Challenger level clay rat.

4 hour first round match for Joker. That was more like a semifinal match. Solid tennis from the 18 year old Prizmic

I threw a free $25 bet on Rublev to win the tournament. He almost didn't even make it out of the first round, wins 10-6 in the fifth set breaka.

What are the spoiler rules for the thread? Spoilers allowed? No spoilers for big matches or big upsets? Or nobody cares so do what you want?

Eta: I think I remember there being a separate spoiler free thread for the semis and championship in the past.

I think any spoiling is fine. Pretty sure no one would have any issues.

Another pretty chalky night. A couple of favorites got pushed or dropped sets but no massive upsets. Except for maybe Cobolli over Jarry.

Still 1 more day of R1 but I don't really see any upset alerts. Maybe Rune, Michelsen, or Purcell.

The 19 year old American Michelsen is a -600 favorite in his first career AO match. He was still in high school this time last year.

Solid finish in Kokkinakis vs Ofner. Aussie crowd was loud and rowdy behind Kokk all the way through the 5th set TB.

Finally a big upset too with Bublik clowning it up and losing in straights to some Indian guy.
