I'll reiterate, you can't make a miscalculation w/fuel mileage in a must-win situation like that,
And why were they in a "must win" situation to begin with?

I still maintain that Gustafson is out after the season.
If he is out, who would take his place? I can’t see RH swapping crew chiefs with the 24 or 5. Would it be an outsider?
I think what happened at Watkins Glen is just another part of the luck and struggles the 9 team has experienced all season. The fuel miscalculation is no doubt a huge and costly mistake, but fuel management in those type of races are always a gamble. I can’t stand Denny but he does bring up some good points from his podcast
quote:
“It’s hard not to throw someone under the bus here. Except for the entire team. People want to pin this on Alan Gustafson. You can try and he is the leader. He’s responsible. But where’s Chase Elliot in this?”
quote:
He added, “I mean, he’s experienced enough if Chris, I shouldn’t say if Chris Gabehart (Crew chief for the #11 car) said to me flip your switch and then come third time by I immediately was said um, that’s not right. I would have said that’s not right. It’s not their third time. I can’t go that far, I know I cannot go that far. That’s just that’s elementary.”
quote:
Um, so they said it multiple times. And why was it not a red flag to anyone that was hearing it? They have a warm room of people that listen to the communication as well. Where is the button? We’re so insane. Did he just say third time by, can we roll that back? Because that’s what they would do. They’re recording all the audio.” “Hey Alan that’s not right, he needs to come next time. I just find it so extremely bizarre, not Chase, not Alan, or not anyone that heard that communication multiple times did not raise their hands and say, ‘Are we sure our math is correct? because it is three times worse than it should be. There is no way, he’d be lucky to go a lap.'”
I don’t doubt there is a lot of trust in Gustafson but there was no one questioning his call. Like Denny said, there are multiple people listening and monitoring the radio. I’m sure there is a technical person that looks at the trends/statistics of fuel, tire wear, engine performance, etc. Was Gustafson wrong? Yes. Do I think he deserves 100% of the blame? No but he will shoulder it.
Unless there is some real tension between Gustafson and Chase behind the scenes, I just don’t see the point in getting rid of him. This season has been a disaster for that team but I don’t see having one bad season warrants making a huge change.

He won’t be fired. Chase has been saying since he got back that he needs to win a race to get in. They’ve had many races to win prior and haven’t got it done. And Chase said if they can’t run good enough to get in it doesn’t matter if in or not. Their car was just a tick off to win. Keep in mind they did have a top 10 car (not a top 3 one) but Chase cost them a better starting spot during qualifying that would have put them closer to front which was their only chance. They only made up time by pitting early but were losing spots to others who pitted later due to tires
Another important note is they are in with owners points chase. Thats the money that matters for team operations. They can see how far that goes and the team will have that to fight for.
They still have 11 races to try and get a win to get on track for next year. Jeff is slowly taking over for Rick and this will be a good test of his being in charge. I don’t see him making a knee jerk reaction due to Chase causing the problem not Gus. And Chase will be the one to tell Jeff if he wants a change. If he doesn’t then no way do they risk making a change and upset him. He brings sponsors to the table and sells a lot of merch.

I know it’s an Xfinity race, but man those stands are empty.

Big wreck early in stage 2.

We got 10 laps to go in the race and they decide to go to commercial

It’s been a hot minute since I sat down and really paid attention to a broadcast. Rick Allen seems like a real dumb arse.
Also, I don’t see how Dale Jr does this. His shite’s just wrecking everywhere regularly, but they also get the W.

Yes. I can’t stand the guy. He was okay back when he was doing Truck Series races on Speed Channel, but he’s awful on NBC. He says the most obvious things all of the time.

Also agree. He stays professional.

Yep. Kurt was one of my least favorite drivers during the fort half of his career, but he really transformed himself as a person and by the end of his career he was one of my favorite drivers. Hell of a career.

Damn this woman to hell.

She butchered that all to hell.

Sounded like she was (badly) stalling to sync to a flyover.
