We got an oval this weekend. All Palou needs to do is pretty much finish and he'll wrap up the championship.

After a rainy Saturday, they were finally able to get a practice session in just before it got dark, and qualifying got pushed to this morning (right now).

Conor Daly replaced the fired Jack Harvey at RLL, and he's far ahead of the Carpenter team that he got fired from. And he's actually the fastest RLL car as well.

The race at Gateway is starting now!

Unfortunately six cars have 9-place grid penalties for an engine change beyond the regular allocation, including the pole sitter Scott McLaughlin! Also three of the Ganassi guys got grid penalties: Palou, Dixon, Sato.

Newgarden is now on pole, with Palou far back, so he has a chance to close up the points gap with just two more races left after this one. It ain't over yet!

Dixon could make a full tank of gas last a year the way he saves fuel. What if he won four straight to close the season and win the title?

What is it about this track that makes passing hard to come by? It’s longer than Iowa, but it felt like a parade out there for a while.

This has to be disappointing for Newgarden, of course. I was hoping Power or Kirkwood would give Dixon a run for his money at the end but they were on the wrong side of the strategy.

i would rather see him win than palou

I think the issue with gateway is that its only 1 lane and no banking.

the short oval package produces too much dirty air making passing difficult

I think they should be able to use p2p on them but its moot since next year they will have the regenerative braking/ERS instead of p2p (bc of the hybrids) which should make the racing even better

Hopefully they make it a night race again too

I liked the race. I wish there were more short ovals. I think that they will do more with the alternative tires on the short ovals for sure.
Push to pass will be going away with the new hybrid systems. Passing will be done while the lead car is harvesting and the trailing car has energy. Will be good on short ovals. I have no idea how it will work at Indy.

When they run the race @ night [*at least it seems like] there’s significantly more passing. - They did try and rubber in the top groove but after the rain, I don’t think it did much for this race.

I’ve read rumors that Milwaukee will be returning next year and Gateway will move back to a Night race. That would help a bunch.

I wonder if the tires are an issue at ovals like this? What I mean is these tires wear faster and that leaves rubber bits all over the outer groove which is why you can’t pass. If they used less wearing/schredding tires perhaps that would help. Tires won’t fall off but can pass or go side by side more

With just two race left and 104 points up for grabs...

Alex Palou has 565 points. Scott Dixon trails Palou by 74 points (491 points) and is the only driver who still has a chance to beat Palou. Dixon's jaw-dropping recent performances, winning the last two races, is the only reason Palou hasn't already wrapped up the championship. Dixon must beat Palou by 23 points in Portland to take the fight to Laguna Seca. It's possible, but Palou is likely to be crowned the champion at the end of the Portland race.

Latest news ahead of Portland

Marcus Ericsson switches from Ganassi to Andretti for 2024. Ericsson joins Colton Herta and Kyle Kirkwood. Grosjean and DeFrancesco's seats are up in the air with Ericsson filling one of them.

Chip Ganassi has signed Linus Lundqvist to a multi-year deal. Lundqvist is 2022 Indy Lights champion and has made three IndyCar starts this year for Meyer Shank Racing in place of the injured Simon Pagenaud. Pagenaud competed in the first eight races this year until a brutal crash during Mid-Ohio practice left him with lingering concussion symptoms.

Tom Blomqvist was previously announced as replacement for Hélio Castroneves for a full-time seat in 2024 at Meyer Shank Racing. He is also now named as Simon Pagenaud's replacement for Portland and Laguna Seca to close out the year.

Former F2 driver Juri Vips will drive the #30 Rahal Letterman Lanigan entry in place of the fired Jack Harvey at Portland and Laguna Seca. Vips has tested twice for RLL at Sebring and Barber, and is now getting a two-race audition for a full time seat next year. Vips was dropped by Red Bull last year following an incident where he uttered a racial slur during an online gaming session, paving the way for Liam Lawson to get the Red Bull reserve driver role.

Wishful thinking , but it's the only way to keep the fight going to Laguna Seca.

Grosjean's race already ruined.

Power overcooks a corner, spins off and stalls. It was a nice clean start, with just Grosjean getting damage in the early laps, but FCY already.

I think Ericsson naturally drifted out a little and Rossi was not careful enough. Of course Rossi blames Ericsson.
