re: 2022 IndyCar Season Thread - Last Race: Laguna Seca 9/11 3:00 PM ET (NBC)

This Sunday, IndyCar visits the Nashville street circuit for the 2nd time.
Last year I believe the event was considered a big success, but the race itself was a huge mess. It felt like there were as many laps under the yellow flag as there were laps under green.
Colton Herta dominated the day, until he didn't. Late in the race he just had to catch up to Marcus Ericsson and pass him for the win. Herta was the fastest car on track. But Herta made an unforced error and hit the wall, handing Ericsson the win.
Speaking of Ericsson, he had one of the most unlikely wins I've ever seen. In the picture below, Ericsson is seen flying through the air after he rear-ended and ended Sébastien Bourdais's race during a full-course yellow early in the race. He landed hard on the front suspension, but somehow it was undamaged. He had to pit to replace the front wing and was given a stop-and-go penalty (served separately, so it's like an extra pit stop), so he obviously ended up at the back of the field, and yet somehow still managed to win the race. That's how it goes when a race has a lot of full-course yellow periods, it can really jumble up the order.
Here's video of the crash: twitter.com/IndyCaronNBC/status/1424491053701378053
The organizers have announced a few minor improvements to the course this year, but the tight section across the bridge isn't getting any help:

The weather delay yesterday caused me to miss qualifying, but I heard Herta brought out a red flag and screwed Rossi's lap.
Two rookies are really coming on strong in the latter half of the season. Lundgaard and Malukas look like future stars. Ilott is doing well too. DeFrancesco might be out of a job next year. Kirkwood is getting promoted to Andretti and is considered a future star but he has not shown that much compared to Lundgaard and Malukas.
The two big talking points from yesterday were (1) the drivers being pissed that they don't get a guaranteed 10 minutes of green flag running time in qualy, and (2) the drivers were saying yesterday that this was the hottest they've ever been.
The windscreen add-on has cut off air circulation in the cockpit. Several drivers have said that they don't want to wear the coolshirt because they've had failures in the past and that makes things worse than not wearing it at all. Graham Rahal said this morning that he is going to wear the coolshirt (reluctantly) because it's just too hot. Multiple drivers tweeted that it was unbearable yesterday.
However, with the storm they're having now, the temperature is only 74° now, so that should take care of those complaints.
Seems like they'll be able to get the race started? Forecast is improving weather and I just realized Nashville is CT not ET.

I don't know IndyCar's specific standards, but it will be something like this:
quote:
Numerous lightning safety protocols have been developed for various other outdoor sporting events
and activities such as golf, mining, large venue events, etc. Many of these protocols can be found on the
National Lightning Safety Institute website at lightningsafety.com. Almost all pre-existing policies for
outdoor sports or industries mandate a minimum of 30 minutes after all lightning is out of a defined
area before resuming activities. Those that specify a safety radius establish a range of 6 to 15 miles
lightning clearance depending on the layout of the facility, industry-specific hazards, and time needed to
adequately move participants to safety.

Strange how they require a start on slicks.
They only have full wets? No intermediate?

Three of the Andretti guys are a disaster. P23, P25, P26.
At least Grosjean is running P2.

Yellows breed more yellows. Now it's resembling last year's race.

That section the track forces those situations. Pretty much guarantees a traffic jam.

They gotta make major changes to the layout, or stop coming to Nashville. They're gonna lose casual viewers with this crap.

At least there is more passing and actual racing than almost the entire Formula 1 schedule

It's a pretty terrible track. They'll have to make major changes if/when they start construction tion on the new stadium. It's going right where the paddock area is.
