Fantastic sprint finish after the yellow. O'Ward wins, Power P2, and McLaughlin P3.

Jimmie Johnson with a fighting P5 finish. He built on what he was able to do yesterday, and passed championship leader Ericsson late in the race for his career best IndyCar finish.

WOW. Rear suspension failure sends race leader Newgarden into the wall.

Newgarden was later interviewed about the crash and he seemed OK. But now Twitter is reporting that Newgarden has fainted and bonked his head and is back in the medical center. Maybe the medical center was too quick to release him after his crash, and now things could be worse with a further head injury. Obviously bad for Newgarden, and not a good look for IndyCar.

Mark Donohue was talking with the track workers after the crash that killed him. Had a brain injury.

Now I'm not saying Newgarden is going to die, just that head injuries can be weird.

Wow. Hope he is okay. IndyStar is reporting on it:

quote:

Josef Newgarden crashed out of Sunday's IndyCar Series race at Iowa Speedway, then collapsed in the bus lot.

Dr. Geoffrey Billows, IndyCar's medical chief, said Newgarden was awake and alert, but was being airlifted to a Des Moines hospital after falling outside his hauler and suffering a head abrasion. Billows added Newgarden was communicative. The helicopter was used because of the distance to the hospital and traffic post-race.

I caught his interview, just seemed like a normal crash. He was coherent and didn't slur his speech and sounded real sharp.

It's crazy.

Josef Newgarden absolutely dominated the weekend and would have won both races of the doubleheader but suffered a failure in the right rear suspension in the 2nd half of the 2nd race, sending him into the wall. Team Penske later announced that the accident was caused by a failure of the right rear damper. If Newgarden had been able to finish and win the 2nd race, he would have vaulted to the lead of the championship. He did however, still manage to rise one place in the championship to P3.

In the end, the big winners of the weekend were Pato O'Ward (P2 and P1), Will Power (P3 and P2), and Scott Dixon (P5 and P4). Marcus Ericsson's P8 and P6 finishes allowed him to maintain his lead in the championship, but he's fading. Ericsson's double-points Indy 500 win was massive for his championship position, but he just isn't at the same level as Newgarden, Power, Dixon and O'Ward. Ericsson won't win the championship. The big loser of the weekend was Alex Palou, whose P6 and P13 finishes (not bad) saw him lose three positions in the championship to P6. But he's only 44 points from the lead, so he's still in strong contention to defend his 2021 championship.

This weekend IndyCar goes back to the Indy Road Course. The 2022 schedule again has two visits to the IMS Road Course on two different weekends. Last year rookie Romain Grosjean got a pole position and two P2 finishes at the IMS Road Course, so he should be a favorite this weekend.

This year's first visit to the IMS Road Course was a crazy race because of the mixed conditions. It wasn't just that conditions were sometimes wet and sometimes dry, sometimes half of the track was wet and the other half of the track was dry, wreaking havoc on drivers running wet tires. The stars of the race were winner Colton Herta and (for me) Takuma Sato, who aggressively passed a bunch of guys in the wet and fought back from bad pit timing that kept putting him down the order, for a fighting P7 finish. But the wild conditions means that the first race is no indication of how this 2nd visit is going to go.

See Indy GP NBC Extended Highlights (16 min) for a recap of the previous visit.

It's a big weekend for race fans in the Indianapolis area, as it's a combined IndyCar and NASCAR event. This weekend IndyCar races on Saturday, the NASCAR Xfinity Series also races on Saturday, and the NASCAR Cup Series races on Sunday. An action-packed weekend!

This Week's News

1. Santino Ferrucci is on standby, Newgarden's medical evaluation for this race weekend will be on Thursday

Newgarden spent a night in the hospital after he collapsed a while after he crashed out of Sunday's race. Ferrucci has already raced twice this season as an injury-replacement driver, plus he raced at the Indy 500.

2. IndyCar announcement on Friday? There are vague bits of news about some IndyCar announcement on Friday at 11:00 AM ET, but nothing concrete on what it's about.

3. Ganassi sues Alex Palou! Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) has sued Alex Palou to resolve their contract dispute. This is a very rare occurence, as team owners and driver have strong motivations to resolve these types of disputes privately. IMO, the fact that CGR is suing Palou would seem to indicate that CGR has a straightforward contract situation, and Palou's side is mishandling this situation badly.

https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/motor/2022/07/27/indycar-chip-ganassi-racing-sues-alex-palou-amid-contract-dispute/65383813007/

To recap:

a. CGR announced that they picked up the option on Palou's contract and Palou will drive for CGR in 2023.
b. Palou quickly tweeted that he did not "approve" of the press release and did not intend to race for CGR after 2022.
c. A few minutes later McLaren F1 announced that they have they have signed Palou to race for McLaren in 2023 (they did not specify which series) and will test for McLaren F1.

I think these are the intents of the parties:

a. CGR wants Palou driving for them next year.
b. Palou does not want to drive for CGR after this year.
c. Palou wants to drive for McLaren next year, presumably in IndyCar.
d. If Palou does not drive for CGR next year, there is no way they will allow him to drive for a competitor in IndyCar next year.

Typically team owners won't get in the way of a driver advancing their career, so in this case if Palou had a contract to race in F1 next year, CGR wouldn't stop him (as long as someone buys out the contract). But CGR will do everything they can to make it clear that Palou will not be able to drive for any other team in IndyCar next year, so if Palou wants to race IndyCar next year, CGR will be his only choice. One question for me is, if Palou then says he wants to race for McLaren in Formula E next year, would CGR let him get out of his contract? One funny thing is that Felix Rosenqvist, whose McLaren IndyCar career is in question (some believe he will end up on McLaren's Formula E team next year), has already speculated that Palou may not be racing anywhere next year. Palou's teammate Scott Dixon has also commented that Palou may not have handled this situation well at all.

Rosenqvist beat Rossi for the pole. Dixon’s team botched qualifying, putting him 20. Grosjean was 22; said to have brake issues.

Josef Newgarden cleared to race. Qualified 5.

Let's not forget the championship leader Marcus Ericsson is starting dead last! A technical problem in Q1 had his engineer instructing him to shut down his engine immediately. The resulting red flag meant the loss of his two fastest laps, and now he has his work cut out for him to mitigate the hit in the championship points he's going to take tomorrow. With Ericsson and Dixon starting way back, Power, Newgarden, O'Ward and Palou are in a great position to power forward in the championship.

After Grosjean's great performances last year, it's unfortunate that he won't be able to duplicate it tomorrow. OTOH, Christian Lundgaard had a great qualy performance (P6), almost matching his amazing IndyCar debut here last year.

Colton Herta, who won here in May and was leading today as well, has some sort of driveline failure and is out. Bad luck hits again. Alexander Rossi might be the guy today. He hasn't won a race in maybe three years.

Great podium. Rossi with his first win in three years. Rookie Christian Lundgaard with his first podium in P2. (His previous best finish was P8.) Will Power is P3.

Power had a very early incident, and when the full-course yellow came out on Lap 4, Power, O'Ward, and Sato pit to go off strategy. In the end it worked out great for Power. O'Ward finished P12 and Sato finished P15. Their need to save fuel appeared to affect them more than Power.

Lundgaard's podium is the best result for RLL in a long time. Lundgaard leads Malukas for Rookie of the Year by 27 points now.

As expected, Ericsson loses the championship lead. Power is now the championship leader after a monster comeback performance.

It was good to see Rossi get the monkey off his back. And to see the Rahal guys have good finishes.

Rutledge usually annoys me and is a waste of time, but I enjoyed his piece on The Workingman's Friend and Robin Miller. Miller often mentioned it in his mailbag column. I’m going to eat there if I ever make it to Indianapolis.
