Seen elsewhere. FWIW:
Incidentally, Red Bull is now discussing building a new wind tunnel in Milton Keynes in order to stay competitive, at a time when wind tunnels should be a thing of the past. They are doing this, so Christian told me, because Lawrence Stroll needs one for his son. Someone really needs to whisper to the Canadian billionaire that you cannot buy the World Championship for one’s offspring. It has been clear for some time that Lance is good, but not quite good enough. It is a similar story with Mick Schumacher who keeps having big crashes while trying to out-do Kevin Magnussen. This is wearing thin for Haas and there is talk that it would probably like a different driver next year, although Ferrari does have a say in the matter.
The problem is that Ferrari has a gap in its young driver conveyor belt at the moment because the only Ferrari youngster who looks even vaguely ready for F1 is Robert Shwartzmann, a Russian. Antonio Giovinazzi is still there but he has been around the block a few times already. British driver Callum Ilott is still a member of the Ferrari programme, but seems to be settled in IndyCar (where he damaged his wrist last weekend when he crashed during the Indy 500) while the next Ferrari youngsters are Formula 3 drivers: including Arthur Leclerc (The Sequel) and Oliver Bearman.
The rumour in Monaco is that Mick’s people are now looking at other options for the future and that Aston Martin might be a good choice for him because he’s German, younger and less hairy than Sebastian Vettel, and he is not too fast for Lance.

If Mick's people are looking at options that means Ferrari is cutting bait. Mini Schu's contract ends at the end of this season.
And that writing was on the wall when Matty signed Sainz through 2024.

If DR gets dropped, what are the chances Gasly replaces him at McLaren?
What I’ve been praying for. That would create a good rilvary between the two and really help push Lando. Gasly is a beast in his own right and I don’t think he will have nearly the pressure with McLaren that he did with RB. Think both would work really well together.

Cool, I'll be in touch. We are staying right by the track.
Fyi, if you haven't already, make sure everyone in your group can get into Canada, covid-wise and all.

Another race down and hulkenburg is still ahead of latifi in driver standings.

Am I correct that there are 3 pay for play drivers? Stroll, Latifi and Zhou?
Posted on 6/1/22 at 11:46 am to weagle99
Depends on how you view pay for play. To some extent they all are.
Stroll definitely has money behind him, but he put up results in F3 (skipped F2).
Albon has about the same resume as Zhou, Zhou has more backers, but Albon has his own. Albon has said he is surprised he got the F1 opportunity.
Latifi finsihed second in F2, but like many drivers his resume wasn't outstanding. His money has helped him stay longer for sure.
Even Kubica, who has a resume out of this world, is still hanging around because of his Orlen backers and not really because the team view him as their best optioned 3rd driver.
Lando has joked that he isn't in F1 because of his dad having money. His dad is only worth a few hundred million.
Mick has results in lower series', but he is some sort of pay driver. Even if the payment is PR something along that line.

IIRC when Haas was scrambling for money a couple of years ago the German investors insisted on a German drive. Then we got Mick.
While Checo isn't a pay for driver he does certainly bring in a ton of sponsor money. Telcel for one.

Checo used to have Carlos Slim as his backer. Probably would have washed out had he not.
Him and Carlos have since split ways, in a lot of situations, but Checo bought himself a lot of time.

Telcel is owned/controlled by Slim isn't it?

It is. Carlos still sends his F1 dollars behind Checo, but behind the scenes it is said that their relationship is frosty. O'ward entering F1 could change some things. The money Carlos is committing isn't what it once was.
Haven't seen Carlos at any F1 races in a while, but maybe he just isn't a big enough character to get on TV with F1.

Maybe we get behind the scenes of the party Checo is apologizing for.

Eh, old boy was having a good time and social media tried to kill him. Caught him grabbing a couple handfulls, dancing, and then stumbling off the yacht.
Should have told everybody to frick off, but PR is what it is today. Can't imagine some of the F1 (poonhound) greats surviving in todays media.
Allegedly his wife deleted a bunch of photos of them together and yada yada yada.
