It's an aerodynamic thing, they don't just decide to go to the top to not wreck. They also had the roof bar in the early 2000's. I'm about the only person that advocates for bringing that back.

That thing was fantastic. After Earnhardt crushed NASCAR for the rules package after the 2000 Daytona 500, that invention came along later that year resulting in Earnhardt being able to do what he did in his final race at Talladega that fall.
