there have been 6 different winners in the last 8 years of the men's draw. definitely the most wide open major every year.
from 2008-2012, there were 5 different winners. also, from 2012-2015, no one has won more than once.
by far the best slam of the year, imo.

I think we are planning on going next year, hopefully fed is back.
would like to attend a GS with the current Big 4 still playing.
oh and Murray is my pick. Nole's second serve will be his undoing. Hope it's not though bc I'm a djokovic fan, but opponents have been teeing the frick off on his 70mph serves.

US Open is usually a lot of fun. I selfishly would like it to be a couple of weeks earlier to not overlap with football season.

Back to tennis. Random thoughts on qualies day 1. Anyone that thought Rafa was tired these days was mistaken. He put in 2-1/2 hours on the practice court. The players can hear your conversations while they're practicing, if you sit close. Some little kid says in a tiny kid voice "hi Rafa." Rafa immediately turns around and says "hi" back. I only mention it because the players almost always ignore the crowd conversations. Not Rafa. He's always gracious with the crowd and I've noticed many times particularly with younger kids. Vamos Rafa !
The Worm did something really weird during his practice. A real WTF moment. He turns around to a woman in the crowd and does with his tongue what got Tony Montana slapped poolside in the movie Scarface. If you've seen the movie you know the move. Really, really weird. It was among the oddest practice moments I've seen and I've seen more than you. I was sitting down the aisle (no one in between us) from Stan during Vekic's match. I went back and forth from the match but he stayed the whole match and I didn't see a single person bother him for an autograph or otherwise demonstrating the qualies crowd is cooler than the main draw crowd. Not less knowledgeable (often more so) simply less annoying.
Thumbs down overall on the new layout IMO (not happy about the new grandstand) but it would take many pages to go into details and everyone will have their own opinion anyway. It's just a first day impression so maybe I'll change it but what they did to court 7 is a crime against the tennis going public. Thumbs up on all the new bathrooms and water fountains though.

Not sure if this is good or not. Just do enough to stay fresh and make it to the second week Rafa!

if higher seeds held until the 4th round:
1) djokovic
13) gasquet
9) tsonga
7) Cilic
4) nadal
15) bautista agut
10) monfils
5) raonic
8) thiem
11) ferrer

16) lopez

del potro is in ferrer's section of the draw. so, if you want to think that he's ready to win in 5-set tennis, he's got a great path to the quarters, or maybe even the semis.
djokovic has a pretty tough draw, when you consider that Cilic is his matchup in the quarters.
i like murray's draw with nishikori in the quarters. he should be solid into the semis.
nadal's draw is pretty good, but with his recent history of being able to lose against pretty much anyone early in tournaments, you never know. a quarterfinal matchup with raonic would be very interesting.
two all-american matchups in the first round: isner/tiafoe and sock/fritz. isner finds himself in the djokovic section of the draw. sock would likely meet Cilic in the 3rd round.
steve johnson gets del potro in the 2nd round.

16 year old Kayla Day of Santa Barbara was given a wild card into the main draw for winning the 18's National championship a few weeks ago. She's a powerful lefty especially for her age. Ive seen her play on the junior circuit here in California. Probably the type of junior that will turn pro instead of going to college. She drew fellow American Madison Brengle in the first round. If she were to pull the upset a likely nightmarish matchup against Madison Keys would await. 17 year old Californian Cici Bellis won three qualifying matches to make the main draw again. She won a match in the main draw 2 years ago as a 15 year old.
