I've never watched any kind of cycling. Can someone explain why it was advantage for those women to stay in a group of 5? And when they were in the tunnel they were motioning to each other. What was that? I don't get the strategy of cycling (besides just going fast).

It is a bout drag. A group can divide work and go faster than an individual. And the rule of thumb is that the first person to sprint to the line is going to be the one who loses.
The motioning had to do with the fact no one wanted to take the pace in the last km, and the peloton was bearing down to pass all of them if they kept screwing around.
