1998 West Monroe recruits

Brad Smalling and Adam McConathy
Did it not feel like we had two studs coming in?
Allow me to regale you in senseless offseason Recruting wishes in the days where it mattered.
Smalling, if I remember was around 6-6. And as a young man, I correlated that kind of size as being unstoppable and in my mind, I created par levels for Oline.
Back then I wanted for OT:
6-4 or taller
275 to 290
For which Dwayne Pierce was too short for my liking. But he was my favorite OL at that time.
I wanted interior to be:
6-2 or 6-3
285 to 305.
Then came Cade Comeaux whose career ended early to IBS or Chrons. Can’t remember. Same with Bob Wynne. I wanted to see those to make it at LSU.
But don’t get me started on McConathy. You knew he would be a great.
Things don’t work out all the time.

6'7" and didn't know how much he weighed. Just knew it was more than the 350 that maxed out the scale.

If what I was told was true, this was 100% on Lou Tepper. Just completely mismanaged everything about that situation.

Sam Forehand (Ocean Springs, MS) was another massive OT in that class (6'7 330)

I just went down a rabbit hole reading through those late 90s/early 2000s classes on LSUSports.Net
Those were the days when commitments actually meant something. No announcement ceremonies for kids already "commited"
Info wasnt everywhere like it is today, you had to dig a little but those recruiting updates in places like tiger rag or local radio hit like crack.
And the bash was truly a one of a kind spectacle. Waiting for faxes from teenagers while hammered in the Belle Atrium on a blustery February morning.

I was an unpaid staff member back then. I remember both vividly and their first day at LSU.

I remember watching Tommy Banks from West Monroe run all over Catholic high. Dude was a beast.

All that may be true. But for a kid growing up in the area at the time, man those teams were mythical.

Not sure if you’re exaggerating, but you’re off by a year. He turned 19 a couple weeks before graduation. But he was just as good his junior year, just didn’t have the supporting cast.

Which would've made him ineligible his entire senior year...Where do y'all come up with this stuff? His birthday is literally 5/4/1978. Which means he was 18 his entire senior year.
Oh and btw, he held back at OCS.

I was at that game. Incredible how good he was. Catholic had Travis Minor at RB & Major Applewhite at QB & West Monroe still won. Tommy Banks is now Doctor Tommy Banks.
