Murderers Row.

Counting their World Series sweep, the 1927 Yankees had a total record of 114–44 --- which is still the all-time highest single-season winning percentage (.721) in American League history.

The roster included nine future Hall of Famers.

Ruth had his famous 60 home run season but Gherig also hit 47 home runs to finish 2nd.

He would give Gehrig some credit: "Pitchers began pitching to me because if they passed me they still had Lou to contend with."

Ruth slugged .772

Gherig slugged .765

But it wasn't all hitting.

The starting pitching lineup had the lowest ERA in the League.

They won the Pennant by 19 games and swept the World Series.

Baseball had a rule that you couldn't repeat as MVP so Babe Ruth was ineligible in 1927. Lou Gherig won it in his place.

2017 Houston Astros put up better numbers than the ‘27 Yankees

Look it up.

Unlike the ‘17 ASTROS….the ‘27 and ‘98 NYY teams did it by the rules.

Guaranteed Yankees players were taking amphetamines and other performance enhancing drugs.

I think this team is beyond just baseball... And you can't include The Dream Team (that was just a manufactured All-Star team, belonging to only one event.)

In a game of a July series against the Washington Senators, the Yankees beat their opponents 21–1, and prompted Senators' first baseman Joe Judge to say, "Those fellows not only beat you but they tear your heart out. I wish the season was over."

The 1927 Yankees batted .307, slugged .489, scored 975 runs, and outscored their opponents by a record 376 runs.

The 1927 Yankees pitching staff led the league in ERA at 3.20

The 1927 World Series was the first sweep of a National League team since the World Series began.

quote:

Babe Ruth at the top of his considerable powers, hitting .356 with a then-record 60 home runs and 164 RBI that year.

Lou Gehrig at first base, who hit .373 with 47 home runs and a league-leading 175 RBI.

Tony Lazzeri at second base, who drove in 102 runs with a .309 average,

Center fielder Earle Combs, who hit .356 and scored 137 runs as the team's leadoff hitter.

Left fielder Bob Meusel drove in over 100 runs with a .337 average.

Whiskey and cigars were powerful drugs no doubt.

This is a little misleading as 3 were the Manager, President and Owner.

Still extremely impressive and I agree they’re the GOAT MLB team.

Can you tell us what was available in 1927?

But I doubt Lou Geherig snorted Cocaine.

He probably drank tiny morsels unknowingly.

Hot Dogs and beer were the drugs of choice. And Lou didn't drink alcohol.

Now 50's Yankees...apparently Amphetamines (the housewife drug) were rampant in the clubhouse, especially to jack you up on a hangover.

1975 Reds, 1929 A's, and 1902 Pirates have to be in the conversation.

They did all they could do, which was dominate their time period. But time marches on and I’m not sure that old team would beat half the league anymore.

Allow them access to the fitness and nutrition of today and they probably would.
