Wilt Chamberlain is the most dominant player in the history of this game and probably the most influential, he's basically the reason the lane was widened and the paint exists, the NBA record book is his biography basically the fact he isn't top 5-6 on your list is a travesty

You lumping Russ with The Big O, without whom there wouldn't be any free agency and large NBA player contracts, is an insult to the sport that is all

People always put Bill Russell on these lists as a default without ever thinking about it. My question is why?
Obviously none of us have seen him play even 1 full game ever.
Is it the 11 championships? He played for a team where the entire starting line-up and the sixth man were all all-stars at a time when there were 8 teams in the entire league. All of them have a bunch of titles.
His career stats per 36 minutes were:
12.8 pts, 19.1 reb, .440 fg%, .471 TS%, 18.9 PER
Other than the rebounds, those stats fricking suck. He never averaged over about 15 points per 36 in any season in his career, and every season he had horrible fg percentages. And he was a big man. It's not like he's shooting from 25 feet.
Yeah, he played defense and got rebounds, but you cannot be considered one of the greatest players of all-time... literally in the top-5 on many people's lists... and be that inept on one side of the ball.
Why not put Ben Wallace as one of the greatest players ever if we're going to completely ignore the offensive side of the ball.

There's nothing wrong with any of those players but KAJ and Wilt are top four in the discussion with MJ and Lebron. Jerry West and Baylor are also strikingly overlooked.
Duncan will be forgotten relatively speaking because he has the personality of an accountant but he's probably the best of his era. Kobe and Shaq are both amazing players but both are over-rated on the list.
Bird was also as great any anyone not named MJ, Lebron, Wilt, or Kareem but his longevity probably brings him down a bit lower (below Magic) than he would have been without the back issues.

Heart or not, he averaged 28 and 28 against Russell.

I love people that were born in the 80s and 90s ranking dudes that played 20+ years before they were born.

better than them assuming history started with their conscious memory like most do
List isn't bad, nobody can make a definitive list because it is opinion

Well ya. What would we do not rank guys like Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth in historical baseball lists since nobody living saw them play? You don’t need to have been alive to make an informed decision based on statistical analysis and available video

For clarification I believe most reasonable people would not rank Larry Bird ahead of Kareem or Magic
Even the biggest Bird homer of all-time Bill Simmons ranked Magic ahead of Bird.
The problem is Bird's peak was too short...he was dominating the NBA winning 3 consecutive MVPs and 3 Championships in 6 years (Bird said he thought they'd win 8 in a row.)
But then Bird hurt his back and was never the same after 1986...while Magic had a resurgant career after 1986 with his back-to-back titles in 87 and 88.

Wilt should be higher. He was so dominant they changed the rules to contain him.
